July 16, 2013: Papa John's, already the official pizza of the NFL and 16 of the league's 32 teams, has signed on as the official pizza of The Football League, a U.K.-based soccer circuit celebrating its 125 anniversary.
Papa John's said the deal was it's first U.K. sponsorship. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The pizza company said it has more than 200 locations throughout the U.K.
The alliance gives Papa John’s the exclusive rights to The Football League’s marks, digital assets (including online banners), dedicated e-mails to league and fans of the 72 member clubs and exclusive Facebook and Twitter promotions.
The 2013 season begins in August.
Other marketing partners include CapitalOne and PowerAde.
“This is a partnership that will be really popular with fans,” Richard Heaselgrave, The Football League’s chief commercial officer, said in a statement. “Like our clubs, Papa John’s restaurants are located in towns and cities across the country and they will reach out to supporters with a range of promotions and custom offers.”
According to John Schnatter, Papa John’s founder, chairman and CEO, “Papa John’s is the recognized leader in quality, which extends from our superior pizza to our leading-quality partners. Much like the NFL in the U.S., The Football League is a premier brand in the U.K., and we are delighted to be associated with the league and its passionate fans.”
