Riddell Seeks Advice From Manning As NFL, NFLPA Continue To Test For Safer Helmets

By Barry Janoff

June 7, 2017: Peyton Manning knows a lot about wearing football helmets and the pros and cons that are associated with that piece of equipment.

Manning, who retired after winning Super Bowl 50 in 2016 as quarterback for the Denver Broncos, is returning as a strategic advisor for helmet and protective equipment company Riddell, and also will be the brand’s first "ambassador supporting the football community."

According to Riddell, which had been the official helmet for the NFL from 1989-2013, Manning’s new role "will encompass contributions in product development, community and charitable initiatives, internal programming, and special projects directed by Riddell executive leadership."

With player health and concussions at the forefront for the NFL and its players, Manning’s intimate knowledge of the game, and helmets in particular, is expected to play a major role in his position with Riddell.

"Riddell is one of the most recognizable brands in football and has long maintained its leadership position through meaningful improvements in player protection and game-tested innovation," Manning said in a statement.

Xenith and Riddell are the only two authorized suppliers of helmets to the NFL, but players can wear any brand of approved helmet they choose, including Schutt, Rawlings and Vicis, according to the league.

Manning’s new role with Riddell comes after the NFL and NFL Players Assn. released in May findings from its "2017 NFL/NFLPA Helmet Laboratory Performance Testing" on helmets that can be worn by NFL players during the upcoming 2017 season.

The NFL, in collaboration with the NFLPA, "through their respective appointed biomechanical experts, coordinated extensive laboratory research on 33 helmets to determine with helmets best reduced head impact severity."

The results were shared with players, club equipment managers and medical and coaching staffs.

"This is just one component of an NFL player’s comprehensive assessment when selecting a helmet," according to the NFL and NFLPA. "Other factors include discussions with the team equipment manager and medical staff as well as player helmet fit, player position and the player’s medical history."

Of the helmets tested by the NFL and NFLPA, 14 were listed in the "Top-Performing Group," led by the Vicis Zero1 01, two Schutt Air XP Pro VTD helmets and three from Xenith. Of the remaining eight, four were from Riddell, three from Schutt and one from Zenith.

Among 19 other helmets tested, which were not included in the Top-Performing Group, seven were from Schutt, five from Riddell and four from Rawllings. (See the full list here.)

As part of its report, the NFL and NFLPA said, "All helmets were certified as compliant with the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment and are therefore permitted for use by NFL players."

It also came with the warning, "No helmet system can completely protect against serious brain and/or neck injuries a player might sustain while participating in football."

The NFLPA in May also launched a multi-media campaign, "Your Mind, Your Body, Your Health," as part of its continued efforts to promote the overall wellness of professional football players,

"There are lots of myths out there about CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a progressive degenerative disease found in people who have had repeated blows to the head), so we’re excited about how far our organization has come in creating a space for players to talk about how they feel emotionally," Andre Collins, executive director for the NFLPA’s Professional Athletes Foundation and a former NFL player, said in a statement.

"We encourage players to seek guidance at the beginning of any symptoms to get a full understanding of what may or may not be happening to their brains. With concerns about CTE and the stigma that still surrounds mental health, this campaign will help us expand that conversation among players so that they are comfortable talking about it with each other as well as their loved ones," said Collins.

Riddell said that Manning wore the brand’s helmets and shoulder pads throughout his career., and was one of the first NFL players to wear the Riddell Revolution.

He wore the Riddell SpeedFlex helmet for his final NFL season, including Super Bowl 50, per Riddell.

During his NFL career, Manning played in 266 games during the regular season and 27 in the post-season, including victories in Super Bowl XLI with the Indianapolis Colts and Super Bowl 50 with Denver.

He missed the 2011 season due to a neck injury, for which he had several operations.

He started 39 games for his high school in New Orleans (34-5 for Isidore Newman) and then started 45 games for the University of Tennessee.

According to Dan Arment, president and CEO for Riddell and BRG Sports, “It’s a transformational period in Riddell’s history as we deliver on our aggressive product road map packed with game-changing innovation.

“Riddell’s ambitious plans to further our head protection leadership will benefit from Manning’s intuitive knowledge of the game. He will also help us deepen our relationships with key industry partners and organizations focused on growing and improving the sport,” said Arment.

"Riddell is also doing great work to educate the football community about new protective technology, the importance of proper equipment management, and coordinating initiatives that make new gear available to football programs in need," said Manning.

"I’m appreciative of the opportunity to invest in the company and join #TeamRiddell to help reinforce the brand’s efforts in advancing the sport I love and believe in."
