Stephens, Osaka, Marketers Take Center Court At 2018 BNP Paribas WTA Finals

By Barry Janoff

October 20, 2018: There is plenty of star and firepower at the 2018 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global this week, even without the presence of world No. 1 ranked Simona Halep or Serena and Venus Williams.

Kiki Bertens, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova, Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova, Sloane Stephens, Elina Svitolina and Caroline Wozniacki all qualified for the $7 million prize tournament, being played in the Singapore Indoor Stadium, part of the Singapore Sports Hub.

Halep pulled out of the WTA Finals late last week due to a lower back injury, which gave first alternate Bertens a spot.

The Top Eight women’s doubles teams also are competing for the WTA championship in their category. Teams include Coco Vandeweghe and Ashleigh Barty and No. 1 ranked Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.

Official sponsors include premier partner Marina Bay Singapore, Peak, Porsche, Prudential, Roca, SAP, Singapore Airlines, StarHub, Tiffany & Co. and Wilson.

Supporting partners include CNBC, Lenora and Sony.

The WTA is working with Legardere Sports and Entertainment to present the competition.

Along with the tennis matches, the WTA Finals have a week-long Fan Village in OCBC Square in the Sports Hub, which includes activation from partners, autograph sessions and retail outlets.

Wozniacki is the defending champion (pictured below from 2017). Osaka, Stephens and Bertens are in their first WTA Finals event.

“I feel like I’ve been thrown in the wind and I’m going to go wherever the breeze takes me,” Osaka, winner of the 2018 U.S. Open Grand Slam, said during the WTA Finals red carpet event  on Saturday.

Stephens is seeking to become the first American woman other than Serena or Venus Williams to win the WTA Finals since Lindsay Davenport’s victory in 1999.

This will be the last WTA Finals in Singapore.

Earlier this year, the WTA signed a long-term deal naming Shenzhen, China as host for the WTA Finals from 2019 through 2028, ending a five-year contract with the Singapore Tourism Board.

Of particular note to players: Beginning in 2019, the prize money will double to $14 million. Marketing and sponsorhips will also be enhanced.

”Shenzhen is an exciting, fast-evolving metropolis of 68 million people and staging the WTA Finals there will ensure the WTA’s global fan base goes from strength to strength,” Micky Lawler, WTA president, said via the organization.

A new record was set on the ground at the WTA Finals in 2017 with an attendance of 133,000, the largest during the four years in Singapore.

Overall, WTA said social media initiatives increased fan engagement globally, with total social video views growing from 22.9 million in 2016 to 27.8 million in 2017.

The WTA earlier this month signed a five-year deal naming Tennis Channel the U.S. TV and digital media home of the WTA, as well as live, OTT streaming rights to more than 2,000 matches each season.

Financial terms of the alliance, which begins January 2019 and runs through the WTA Finals in October, were not shared. Current WTA media partner beIN Sport will continue to offer these events outside of the U.S.

To become part of the Final Eight, each of the 56 tournaments (52 WTA events plus the 4 Grand Slams) leading into the WTA Finals represented one lap of the Porsche Race to Singapore, spread across 30 countries. Players with the most points qualified for the WTA Finals.

The Top Eight singles players will compete in a round-robin format with the winner taking home the Billie Jean King Trophy. The Top Eight doubles teams will compete in a knock-out format for the WTA Finals Martina Navratilova Trophy.

The first Finals were played in 1972, in Boca Raton, Florida, with $100,000 in total prize money.

Shenzhen becomes the tenth different city — and the second in Asia — to host the WTA Finals following Boca Raton (Fla.) (1972-1973), Los Angeles (1974-1976, 2002-2005), Oakland (1978), New York (1977, 1979-2000), Munich (2001), Madrid (2006-2007), Doha (2008-2010), Istanbul (2011-2013) and Singapore (2014-2018).

The Nitto ATP Men’s Finals is scheduled for Nov. 11-18 in The O2 in London.

Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin del Potro, Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev already have qualified, with the final three spots to be determined this month.
