Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past. Let us accept our own responsibility for the future.

Poll: MLB Will Best Survive Current Recession

April 9, 2009: Despite rising ticket prices, the soon-to-open $1.3 billion Yankee Stadium and other costs that continue to escalate, a poll conducted by NYSportsJournalism.com shows that 50% of those who responded feel Major League Baseball will best survive the current economic recession. Among respondants to the survey, which was conducted in conjunction with PollDaddy.com, the NFL received 20%, the NBA 13%, Nascar 10% and the NHL 7% of the vote. The poll was conducted over the past week (April 1-8), which coincided with the opening of the 2009 MLB season and may have added to the aura surrounding the game. Although respondants indicated that aspects of baseball would take a hit - a reduction in the number of games they might attend topping the list - the game is still regarded as America's national pastime by many and is considered impervious in many ways to the economic hardships facing the country. "Even if I don't go to as many [baseball] games, I'll still watch on TV and buy the merchandise," read one comment. The New York Yankees took the brunt of criticism, mainly due to the costs being passed off to consumers to cover not only the new Stadium but the signing of high-price free agents Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia & A.J. Burnett. The NFL's 0-16 Detroit Lions drew this comment: "It's hard to put marketing dollars into a team when you get nothing -as in wins - back." Back to Home Page
