Real Madrid Tops ManU For Title As Most Valuable Soccer Franchise In Europe

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

May 29, 2019: In soccer, numbers on the pitch mean everything.

And so do the numbers in the bank.

Real Madrid has much to kick about in both areas, coming in as the No. 1 most valuable soccer team in Europe, $3.68 billion, according to "The European Elite 2019: Football Clubs' Valuation" from global financial services firm KPMG.

Real Madrid replaces Manchester United, valued at  $3.65 billion.

ManU had been No. 1 three previous years.

At $3.1billion, Bayern Munich drops from No. 2 to No. 3, but remains one of just three clubs valued by KPMG at more then $3 billion.

The Top Five also includes Barcelona ($2.8 billion) and Manchester City ($2.8 billion).

The most recent global franchise value report from Forbes has the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys as the world’s most valuable sports team, valued at $4.8 billion; followed by three soccer clubs: Manchester United ($4.123 billion), Real Madrid ($4.088 billion) and Barcelona ($4.064 billion).

That, in effect, makes the three clubs atop the KPMG list with Bayern Munich also the most valuable soccer franchises in the world.

The KPMG report, which covers the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons — when Real Madrid was the two-time Champions League title winner —  uses as the basis for finances: account profitability, broadcasting rights, popularity, sporting potential and stadium value.

KPMG valued 32 clubs overall.

“The transition of major clubs into media and entertainment companies, with global brand exposure . . . helps create more stable and predictable cash flows and consequently better warranties to investors and financiers,” Andrea Sartori, KPMG’s global head of sports and author of "The European Elite 2019: Football Clubs' Valuation,” wrote in the report.

“It comes by no surprise, that such remarkable growth has heated the debate concerning the transformation of European clubs’ competition structure.”

The representation of the English Premier League “(confirms) its dominance having nine clubs on the list and accounting for 43% of the total aggregate value.”

Tottenham Hotspur, which just opened its new stadium and has an alliance with the NFL, was up 31% in value versus the previous KPMG report. Real Madrid was up 10%  Inter Milan was up 41%.
