T-Mobile, MLB Has $1M+ Home Run Plan To Aid Team Rubicon Hurricane Relief Efforts

By Barry Janoff

October 8, 2017: T-Mobile and MLB have unveiled a plan to raise funds and awareness for ongoing hurricane relief and recovery efforts in Houston, Florida and Puerto Rico, counting on players to hit home runs and fans to use social media to help reach a goal of more than $1 million.

T-Mobile, the official wireless sponsor for MLB, said it would donate at least $1 million to Team Rubicon for hurricane recovery  based on the number of home runs hits during the MLB post-season, at $10,000 per home run hit,.

In addition, T-Mobile said that each time people sent a tweet using the hash tag #HR4HR, it would donate another $1 to Team Rubicon’s recovery efforts, with the goal of $500,000 added to the $1 million count.

Team Rubicon is a non-profit group founded in 2010 by two military veterans, who have since organized disaster relief efforts fronted by other military veterans.

T-Mobile is also the presenting sponsor for the NLDS.

T-Mobile said the combined total of home runs and tweets would translate to a minimum $1 million donation even if the total fell short. But the company anticipated that the total would be higher.

"if we see 120 home runs and 500,000 tweets using #HR4HR, we’ll donate $1.7 million to Team Rubicon. If we see 40 home runs and 500,000 tweets using #HR4HR (for a total of $900,000), we’ll still donate at least $1 million to Team Rubicon for hurricane recovery."

There were 14 home runs hit during the Wild Card games and the first two ALDS games (with three from the Houston Astros’ Jose Altuve), another 12 during the second ALDS games and first two NLDS games on Friday and six more during the two NLDS games on Saturday, bringing the total donation to $320,000.

T-Mobile said it would present the donation to Team Rubicon during the 2017 World Series.

"Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida are home to some of the biggest baseball fans in the world, and they need our help. So we’re stepping up,” John Legere, president and CEO for T-Mobile, said in a statement.

"Plus, throughout the MLB post-season, we’re turning the biggest moments of the game into moments that really matter with every home run worth $10,000 — and every fan’s tweet with #HR4HR adding to the relief effort."

Beyond baseball, T-Mobile said it would continue its support of "Text to Give," enabling its customers to donate directly to help those in need by texting MARIA, HARVEY or IRMA to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross regional relief efforts. (Donations would appear on their next month’s bill.)
