Robert Griffin III: Still All In For Week 1 Of NFL Season, As adidas Can Attest

By Barry Janoff

March 22, 2013: One year ago, Robert Griffin III was showing his talents for NFL scouts and coaches during his Pro Day at Baylor. The Washington Redskins did what was needed to draft the quarterback — moving up in the NFL draft to be able to select him No. 2 overall behind Andrew Luck —  and then riding his arm and legs to a 10-6 record, first place in the NFC East and the playoffs.

But Washington lost both the playoff game (24-14 to the Seattle Seahawks) and Griffin, who had endured various injuries during the season (knee, back, concussion) but was sent to the operating table with torn ACL and LCL ligaments in his right knee.

Griffin is now on the rehabilitation road, with adidas chronicling his progress. An initial TV spot, "Blow Up," had images of scoreboards, trophies and football fields blowing up, with RG3 saying that the past was behind him, the future — and Week 1 of the NFL campaign — ahead.

In the follow-up, Griffin continues his rehabilitation but broadens his scope to include incoming players who hope to be part of the NFL Draft in April.

"Are you all in for Week 1," Griffin asks as scenes of players working out in gyms, weight rooms and on football fields play out. "All eyes are going to be on you. That's certainly true for me. I want all the eyes to be there. To see me out there working. Knowing that I'm getting better."

Redskins' head coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that Griffin's attitude is grounded in real life and not just a marketing campaign.

“He’s a worker,” Shanahan said during a media conference this week at an NFL meeting of owners and head coaches in Phoenix. “He’s working out six, seven, eight hours a day. He’s doing everything he possibly can to get himself ready. If hard work has anything to do with it, he’ll be ready. But it’s a process. I can’t tell you anything until July. If I did, I’d be kidding you.”

According to RG3 in the new spot, which will air across sports programming beginning this weekend, "You don't start preparing for Week 1 when it shows up. You start preparing now. Every day you go to practice like it's a game day. Get out there, pull some tires, run some hills. Whatever it takes. Do whatever you have to do to make sure you're getting better every day." (See the full spot here.)

As an homage to his time at Baylor, where Griffin earned a degree in political science and was working toward his master's, the University this week established the Robert Griffin III Quarterback Scholarship, "which will be awarded to a standout quarterback on the Baylor football team," according to the University.

"He’s working out six, seven, eight hours a deay, doing everything he possibly can to get himself ready. If hard work has anything to do with it, he’ll be ready."

Now entering his second NFL season, Griffin is learning from his experiences and getting an education from his coach.

“You’re always going to grow from your first year to your second year,” said Shanahan. “There’s a lot of areas that you grow in. . . . He is going to have to learn how to do is how to slide, how to throw the football away, how to protect himself."

Emphasized Shanahan, "You can’t take shots consistently in the National Football League.”
