• NBA All-Star James Harden has joined the ownership group of the Houston Dynamo. According to the MLS club, the 2018 NBA MVP with the Houston Rockets becomes the fifth member of an ownership group led by Gabriel Brener, which also includes boxing icon Oscar De La Hoya, Ben Guill and Jake Silverstein.

In addition to the Dynamo, the group also owns the NWSL's Houston Dash and BBVA Stadium, the home venue for both clubs.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to join the ownership group of the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash and proud to be a part of a club with tremendous history and a great future,” Harden said via the team.

• Cavs Legion Gaming Club, the NBA 2K League affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers, has unveiled plans for an eSports center in Cleveland’s Battery Park neighborhood. The 2,700 square foot venue is scheduled to open this fall,

• The NFL Network is planning 129 hours of “Inside Training Camp Live” coverage July 22-Aug. 7 Additional coverage will appear across NFL media platforms including NFL.com, NFL Films, NFL app and NFL RedZone.

ESPN also said it would provide comprehensive coverage of the opening week of the 2019 NFL training camps beginning July 22 on daily editions of SportsCenter and NFL Live.

• NBC’s Golf Channel unveiled details for its next Golf Films project, “Tiger Woods: Chasing History,” to premiere July 22  The film will present viewers with a chronological look at the “sights and sounds from each of Woods’ 81 professional victories, from his first at the Las Vegas Invitational in 1996, through the most recent win at the Masters earlier this year.”

• Pete Frates and Pat Quinn, co-founders of ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, have launched with The ALS Assn. the 5th anniversary of “Challenge Me” with a “new call to action to reignite the passion and generosity of the millions of people who dumped ice water on their heads in the summer of 2014.”

New Deals Ensure Fox Sports, Manfred, DAZN Will Continue To Be Hits With MLB

November 15, 2018: The World Series is over, and the 2019 season is months off, but, just like crying, there is no off-season in baseball.

MLB unveiled three deals today during its GM meetings that will have major impacts on the league with Fox Sports, DAZN and commissioner Rob Manfred.

Fox Sports and MLB have signed a multi-year, multi-platform rights agreement, beginning in 2022, expanding the network’s TV, digital and Spanish-language rights thru 2028.

Fox Sports and Fox Deportes maintain the TV rights to MLB’s jewel events, including serving as the exclusive TV broadcast partner.

Financial terms were not shared, but the extension was put at $5.1 billion by industry analysts.

MLB also said that owners have unanimously agreed to extend the contract of commissioner Rob Manfred through the 2024 regular season. Manfred was elected commissioner in August 2014, taking over from Bud Selig in January 2015.

In addition, MLB signed a pact with DAZN (pronounced Da-Zone), the sports-streaming and PPV service under the auspices of former ESPN president John Skipper, to create live “look-in” shows during the season.

The weeknight shows will be similar to the NFL’s RedZone and segments on NBA TV that move from game to game to present live key plays and highlights.

Financial terms of the DAZN deal were also not released, but were put at $300 million over three years by industry insiders.

“We have great partners, and at the top of that list is Fox,” Manfred said during a press event at the GM meetings in Carlsbad, Calif.

“Fox has been innovative in the way our game is presented to fans, which is important to us. It is really important to have a partner like Fox to represent our games and jewel events.”

Fox Sports has been a national MLB rights-holder since 1996 and the league’s exclusive national broadcast partner since 2001. To date, Fox Sports said it has aired 21 World Series and 23 All-Star Games since its inaugural national rights deal with MLB.

Beginning in 2022, the amount of regular season and post-season games televised by the Fox broadcast network will increase.

The new MLB and Fox agreement includes expanded streaming, social media and highlight rights. Fox will also televise special event games to be determined over the term of the agreement.

The network’s League Championship Series and Division Series coverage will remain the same as it’s been since 2014, alternating leagues each season (currently with Turner’s TBS).

As in previous deals, MLB Network would continue to have the rights to two games from the League’s Division Series that Fox is airing. Under terms of the new deal, Fox Sports will also expand its digital rights.

In addition, under the new deal, Fox Sports continues its Saturday regular-season broadcast windows — two per Saturday (52 total) — with highlights packages as well as MLB-centric programs and Spanish-language rights through Fox Deportes.

According to Eric Shanks, Fox Sports CEO and executive producer, “Major League Baseball has been a cornerstone of Fox Sports since 1996.

“It’s an honor to have shared countless historic moments with our viewers over the last 22 seasons. We are extremely proud to continue to be the home of Major League Baseball’s jewel events for the next decade.”

The deal with DAZN is its first for a U.S.-based MLB telecast but not the first between the two sides.

Prior to the 2018 season, DAZN signed a three-year agreement to carry programming in Canada from MLB Network, including 200 live regular season games.

In 2017, DAZN signed a four-year deal to show more than 600 live MLB games in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, covering the regular season, the All-Star Game, playoffs and World Series.

The MLB-DAZN alliance will be anchored by a live show each weeknight, co-produced by MLB and DAZN and available to subscribers via DAZN's digital sports streaming platform.

It will feature live look-ins at MLB action across the AL and NL. There also will be on-demand MLB content and live weekend wrap shows available to DAZN subscribers.

"DAZN's multi-sport streaming platform provides Major League Baseball and our clubs an important opportunity to extend the game's digital reach," said Manfred via MLB.

"Our collaborative production will benefit DAZN's subscribers with new ways to follow the captivating storylines, talented young stars and impactful plays happening around the game every day."
