• The NBA London Game 2019 will feature a regular-season game between the Washington Wizards and the New York Knicks in The O2 on Thursday, Jan. 17. Marketing partners include Foot Locker, Gatorade, Nike, SAP and Tissot, with additional partners to be unveiled in the coming months.

• The Denver Broncos home field is getting a temporary name change to Broncos Stadium at Mile High. It had been Sports Authority Field at Mile High, but the national sporting goods retailer, which had been based in Englewood, Col., ceased operations in July 2016. A search for a more permanent naming rights holder is currently underway.

• Per AP Sports: Burger King in Russia ran a promotion on social media offering a lifetime supply of Whoppers to any women who become pregnant by World Cup players. The offer was then deleted, In a statement Wednesday to AP, Burger King said, “We are sorry about the clearly offensive promotion that the team in Russia launched online. (It) does not reflect our brand or our values and we are taking steps to ensure this type of activity does not happen again.”

• The PGA TOUR has signed a deal with Facebook to distribute exclusive Saturday and Sunday live competition coverage, on a free basis, from eight tournaments leading into the FedExCup Playoffs for the 2017-18 season. Airing on Facebook Watch in the U.S., coverage begins at the Travelers Championship on June 23-24. Other events in 2018 include: Quicken Loans National; A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier; John Deere Classic; RBC Canadian Open; World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational; Wyndham Championship; and The Northern Trust.

Rogers Communications Extends Sports Reach With Third Naming Rights Deal

December 3, 2013: Rogers Communications, which last week unveiled a mega-media, 12-year, $5.2 billion deal with the NHL, has purchased the naming rights for the future home of the Edmonton Oilers.

The venue, scheduled to open in 2016, will be named Rogers Place.

This would be the third sports venue in Canada with Rogers naming rights. The communications from has naming rights to Toronto's Rogers Centre stadium, home to MLB's Blue Jays and the Argonauts of the Canadian Football League; and Rogers Arena in Vancouver, home to the NHL's Canucks.

The naming rights deal was unveiled during a media conference in Edmonton, Alberta, Tuesday afternoon that was attended by representatives from the city, the team and the NHL.

"Today's announcement builds on our long-term commitment to the Edmonton Oilers, its hockey fans and our investment in Alberta," John Boynton, evp and CMO for Rogers Communications, said in a statement. "Rogers Place will be one of the most technologically enabled stadiums in North America. We look forward to bringing passionate fans a connected game experience powered by the country's fastest LTE network."

The Oilers are owned by Rexall Sports Corp. and currently play in Rexall Place.

In addition to the naming rights deals, Rogers has a 37.5% equity stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, 100% ownership of the Blue Jays; and long-term media agreements with the NHL, MLB, NFL, NBA, MLS, NCAA, Rogers Cup, UFC and international soccer groups.

The deal with the NHL, unveiled on Nov. 26, gives Rogers beginning with the 2014-15 season national Canadian rights to all NHL games, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final, on all of its platforms in all languages. It also encompasses exclusive rights in Canada to such special events as the NHL All-Star Games and NHL drafts. A new Sunday night national broadcast would feature marquee match-ups.
