December 21, 2022: Six NFL teams are sending at least five players to Las Vegas, led by the league-leading Philadelphia Eagles with eight Pro Bowlers, including six starters.
The NFL’s long-running but much maligned Pro Bowl is being reimagined, reconfigured and rebooted into a week-long series of skill and challenge events in Las Vegas, culminating with a flag football Pro Bowl Games presented by Verizon.
The multi-day AFC vs NFC competition is scheduled to be held the week before Super Bowl LVII Feb. 12, 2023 (in State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Az.), with the flag football Pro Bowl to be played in Allegiant Stadium, on Feb. 5 (ESPN and ABC).
The Dallas Cowboys (seven), Kansas City Chiefs (seven), Baltimore Ravens (six), San Francisco 49ers (six) and Minnesota Vikings (five) are the other teams with at least five Pro Bowlers.
Twenty-five of the players selected to the Pro Bowl today are first-time All-Stars.
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa received 306,861 votes to lead all players in balloting for the 2023 Pro Bowl Games presented by Verizon.
Miami wide receiver Tyreek Hill (293,679) was second overall, followed by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (271,541 votes), Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson (264,653 votes) and Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce (248,279) rounded out the top five.
The 49ers led all clubs in total votes received. The Vikings, Dolphins, Eagles and Chiefs were also the Top Five teams to receive the most fan votes.
Roster selections are determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group's vote counts one-third toward determining the 88 Pro Bowl players.
Jalen Hurts of the Eagles led all NFC quarterbacks (215,634).
Christian McCaffrey of the 49ers led all RBs (205,990).
Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans led all AFC running backs (160,799).
49ers George Kittle led all NFC TEs (201,905).
Throughout the week, the Pro Bowl Games will also “integrate new challenges where players showcase their football and non-football skills in unique competitions.”
The NFL said the “revamped programming allows the top stars to show off their skills and celebrate their accomplishments in a fun, memorable way, surrounded by their families and fans.”
The NFL said it worked with ESPN and Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions to program the events.
Peyton Manning will be head coach for the AFC, Eli Manning for the NFC.
"We've received invaluable feedback from players, teams and fans about reimagining the Pro Bowl,” Peter O’Reilly, NFL evp-club business and league events, said via the NFL.
“As a result, we're thrilled to use the Pro Bowl Games as a platform to spotlight flag football as an integral part of the sport's future while also introducing fun, new forms of competition and entertainment that will bring our players, their families and fans closer than ever before.”
In addition to the AFC vs NFC game on Sunday, the NFL said the Pro Bowl Games would integrate flag football throughout the week.
That is scheduled to include the Play Football Opening Night and NFL Flag Championships presented by Subway, which was created in partnership with RCX Sports and will feature the top girls' and boys' youth Flag teams nationwide and from around the world.
