Rousey, Mayweather, Cowboys Top Yahoo Lists Of Most Searched In Sports 2015

By Barry Janoff

December 2, 2015: Yahoo says that there are "billions of searches" across its platforms, which include Yahoo, Polyvore, Flickr and Tumblr.

But in 2015, some search requests mattered more than others.

According to Yahoo, female athletes were totally in demand by searchers. There were eight women among the Top Ten Searched Athletes, with MMA star Ronda Rousey leading the list.

Rousey, who last month lost her UFC title to Holly Holm, had plenty of endorsement deals this past year in addition to searches, including Monster Energy, Carl's Jr., Reebok, Metro PC, Snail Games and Buffalo clothing and accessories.

Female athletes filled the Top Five spots — Rousey was followed by skier Lindsey Vonn, tennis star Maria Sharapova, race car driver Danica Patrick and tennis' Caroline Wozniacki — with the top-searched male athlete being Tiger Woods at No. 6.

The much-hyped fight this past May between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao drove them to become the No. 7 and No. 8 most-searched athletes, respectively, on Yahoo. The Top Ten also included tennis' Ana Ivanovic and Hope Solo, goalie for the FIFA World Cup champion U.S. National Women's Soccer Team.

Solo's off-field situation involving accused issues of domestic violence no doubt also led many to search her name.

The Top Ten Most-Searched Sports Teams on Yahoo are led by the NFL, which had four of the top five teams.

The Dallas Cowboys were No. 1, followed by the surging MLB Chicago Cubs, then three more NFL teams: the Green Bay Packers, Super Bowl XLIX champion New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, which reached but lost in the Big Game this past February.

The NBA champion Golden State Warriors come in at No. 6, followed by the NHL Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers, MLB's San Francisco Giants and the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Mayweather Jr.-Pacquiao fight headed the list of Top Searched Sports Moments on Yahoo, followed by the U.S. Women's Soccer Team winning the World Cup.

The on-going situation among the NFL, the Patriots and Pats quarterback Tom Brady drove "Deflate-gate" to No. 3 on this list.

American Pharoah's conquest of horse racing's Triple Crown was No. 4 among the Top Searched Sports Moments, with Super Bowl XLIX rounding out the Top 5.

Rousey vs. Holm was No. 6. Serena Williams, who was absent from the Top Ten Most-Searched Athletes, was No. 7  among the Top Searched Sports Moments for winning three tennis Grand Slam events and reaching the semi-finals of the other, the U.S. Open, this past year.

The Top Ten here also included Jordan Spieth sweeping all major awards for the PGA Season, Caitlyn Jenner winning an ESPY and Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors scoring an NBA-record 37 points in the third quarter of a game on Jan. 23 against the Sacramento Kings.

There were four sports-related figures among the Top Male Celebrity searches, led by Scott Disick, former NBA player Lamar Odom and his near-death situation, Tiger Woods, Justin Bieber, former NFL quarterback and current ESPN college football analyst Tim Tebow, Robin Williams, Kanye West and Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.

In the political arena, the Top Searched Presidential Hopefuls on Yahoo in 2015 may or may not foreshadow events to come in 2016. The list included (in order) Carly Fiorina, Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Ben Carson, Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Lindsey Graham, Scott Walker, Chris Christie and Ted Cruz.

On TV, the Top Searched Non-Reality TV Shows on Yahoo in 2015 were The Walking Dead, Young and the Restless, Game of Thrones, Days of Our Lives, Bold and Beautiful, Empire, Sons of Anarchy, Orange Is the New Black, House of Cards and South Park.
