Ruiz-Joshua Face Each Other In Saudi Arabia As Bout Faces Global Criticism

By Barry Janoff

August 12, 2019: The first bout between Andy Ruiz Jr. and Anthony Joshua caught the boxing world off-guard.

For Ruiz-Joshua 2, according to organizers, “The whole world will be watching.”

"Andy Ruiz Jr. vs Anthony Joshua 2 | Rematch" has been confirmed by Matchroom Boxing.

“Clash On The Dunes Diriyah, Saudi Arabia” is scheduled for Dec. 7, 2019.

The fight will be held under the auspices of Skill Challenge Entertainment, a group that industry analysts said is “putting up tens of millions of dollars to bring the fight to Saudi Arabia.”

“This is such a huge occasion for boxing, an iconic moment,” Eddie Hearn, group managing director for Matchroom Boxing, which represents Joshua, said during a media conference today in London.

“With the response that we’ve seen, mainly good and some negative, I guarantee you with curiosity the whole world will be watching this fight.”

The bout is scheduled to take place in an outdoor venue being built for the event in Diriyah, located about 13 miels west of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.

The “negative” Hearn referred to has also been faced by other significant sports events that have taken place in the region due to the government’s policies regarding women, the LGBTQ community and others.

Among them: WWE’s Royal Rumble in 2018, the opening race of the 2018-19 Formula E season, the European golf tour. the Italian Super Cup and the World Boxing Super Series.

Music star Nicki Minaj canceled her performance at the World Jeddah Fest last month specifically because of Saudi Arabia’s policies toward women.

However, Matchroom Boxing, working with Skill Challenge Entertainment, believes the choice of venue for Ruiz-Joshua 2 is correct.

“Many of those we spoke to,” said Hearn. “Everyone has enjoyed the experience from a fan experience and from a logistical experience and that is very important to us.”

According to Hearn, “There was a lot of talk about where this fight would be held: Back in Madison Square Garden (where Ruiz-Joshua 1 was held on June 1). In Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. We want to grow boxing beyond the traditional areas.

“We wanted to go somewhere that believed in the sport of boxing and had a vision for the sport. Saudi Arabia is for real. They are investing in boxing and that’s important to us. We have an obligation to grow the sport in new areas.”

Ruiz Jr., represented by Top Rank, defeated Joshua by TKO in the 7th round to become the first fighter of Mexican descent to win a heavyweight world title.

Finances, of course, are a key motivation. Hearn and Omar Khalil, Skill Challenge Entertainment managing partner, who joined Hearn on-stage in London, said the venue could hold upward of 16,000 and would be accompanied by a music and entertainment festival.

Sky Sports will air the bout in the U.K. DAZN is expected to be confirmed as the U.S. outlet.

Marketing partners will be unveiled in the coming months.

“With the response that we’ve seen, mainly good and some negative, I guarantee you with curiosity the whole world will be watching this fight.”

“We had approaches from Saudi Arabia, from Dubai, from Qatar, from Abu Dhabi,” said Hearn, who showed clips from the first bout as part of the presentation. “And there’s been numerous conversations in the past about staging events in that region.

“This event could change boxing forever. If Saudi Arabia are going to invest in these kind of fights, with the population that they have and the potential to grow the sport, you could be seeing a big change in the dynamics of the sport.”

“This is such a huge occasion for boxing, an iconic moment.”

The first fight took place in New York's Madison Square Garden on June 1 and was seen in the U.S. on DAZN.

Ruiz Jr. (33-1, 22 KOs), 29, is out of Imperial, Calif.

Joshua (22-1, 21 KOs), 29, is out of the U.K.

Hearn said there would be press conferences in early September in New York, London and Saudi Arabia with the boxers.
