ESPN Replacing 'Jon Gruden’s QB Camp' With Russell Wilson-Led 'QB2QB' Show

By Barry Janoff

March 7, 2018: For eight years, leading up to the NFL Draft, a mainstay on ESPN was Jon Gruden’s QB Camp, during which former NFL head coach-turned-analyst/commentator Jon Gruden would sit with NFL quarterback prospects about to be drafted, watch film, break down their pros and cons and put them through drills on the field.

With Gruden signing in January to become the next head coach for the Oakland Raiders, ESPN looked for a way to continue and build upon the legacy of Gruden’s QB Camp.

The network said it has found a replacement in Russell Wilson, quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, to head a new show, SportsCenter Special: QB2QB.

Scheduled to debut in April ahead of the 2018 NFL Draft (April 26-28), Wilson will host one-on-one conversations with quarterback prospects Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State) and J.T. Barrett (Ohio State), as well as running back Saquon Barkley (Penn State), who is a projected Top Five pick.

ESPN said that QB2QB specials would air across the ESPN networks, with excerpts of the conversations will be featured on ESPN.com.

Behind-the-scenes photos, video and other content will be available on Wilson’s TraceMe mobile app.

ESPN Monday Night Football producer Jay Rothman will oversee the project along with producer Josh Hoffman.

“Russell is an ideal mentor for these young players entering the NFL," Rothman said in a statement. "He overcame a fair amount of skepticism when he joined the league and worked hard to become one of the NFL’s top players.

“Our QB Camp series with Jon Gruden highlighted the relationship between coach and quarterback; this new iteration of the series will now explore the mentoring relationship between NFL veteran and these soon-to-be rookie players.”

Wilson has spent part of his off-season working out as a member of the New York Yankees Spring Training roster.

During the shows, ESPN said that Wilson would “discuss his own NFL experiences from the past six seasons, including making the transition from college to the NFL, winning and losing Super Bowls, being the face of an NFL franchise, starting over with new coaches, and building relationships with teammates.”

ESPN said that QB2QB would also explore “mental conditioning with Wilson and his cognitive coach Trevor Moawad. The Founder and President of Moawad Consulting Group.”

Moawad works with Wilson and other pro athletes in self-awareness and mental skills training.

Wilson was one of Gruden’s pupils as an incoming rookie in 2012, part of a QB Camp class that also included Andrew Luck, Nick Foles, Case Keenum and Kirk Cousins.

All told, during an eight-year run (2010-17), Gruden mentored more than 50 quarterbacks, including 17 regular starters from the 2017 NFL season, according to ESPN.

Wilson, who guided the Seahawks to a victory in Super Bowl XLVIII but was on the losing end the next year during Super Bowl XLIX, has passed for more than 22,000 yards and has been named to the Pro Bow four times.

Jon Gruden’s QB Camp was one of my favorite experiences of the NFL Draft process because it helped prepare me for some of the physical and mental demands of playing in the NFL,” according to Wilson.

“Now, I’m excited to have the opportunity to meet Baker, Saquon, Mason and J.T. to try to help them get ready for the next level as part of ESPN’s QB2QB.”

Wilson said the experience would also help his own career. “I look forward to feeding off their energy and excitement as I prepare myself for the new experiences that await me this season.”
