Seiko Watch Secures Soccer Alliances With Landon Donovan, FC Barcelona

March 23, 2011: Landon Donovan, who plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer and also is a world-renonwed athlete as a member of the U.S. National Soccer Team, has signed a deal with Seiko that will continue to build his image domestically and internationally.

The global watchmaker said that Donovan would become the first brand ambassador for its new Sportura Collection, which will be unveiled this week at Baselworld 2011, the world watch and jewelry show being held in Messe Basel, Switzerland, March 24-31.

The deal with Donovan coincides with Seiko's three-year alliance to become the official watch partner of FC Barcelona,, one of the most successful soccer clubs in the world. The FC Barcelona deal includes multi-media marketing that will also feature the Sportura collection.

Donovan will be featured in marketing for the Sportura collection and will also be part of Seiko's 130th anniversary celebration.

Donovan also has deals with Gatorade, Nike and Wild Soccer Bunch. He is represented by Richard Motzkin of Wasserman Media Group, Los Angeles.

“I always have looked for a watch that keeps up with my active lifestyle, which is why I like the comfort, innovation and design of the Seiko Sportura Collection,” Donovan said in a statement. “I am honored to be the first athlete to join the Seiko family as a brand ambassador, and anticipate celebrating their dedication to perfection and launch of the new, dynamic timepieces that will once again demonstrate that Seiko is the revolutionary front runner in watchmaking worldwide.”

Donovan will be playing with the U.S. National Team in a friendly match against world player of the year Lionel Messi and Argentina at the New Meadowlands Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ, on March 27.

According to Ken Hagiwara, President and CEO of Seiko Corporation of America, “We are thrilled to welcome Landon Donovan to the Seiko team as brand ambassador for our new Sportura Collection that expresses the true dynamic spirit of our brand, while helping us celebrate Seiko’s 130th anniversary this year. Synonymous with the essence of Seiko, Mr. Donovan shows a dedication to perfection and success that we commend. We look forward to working with him.”
