Serena Makes Historic Tennis Return, Djokovic Also Eyes Australian Open

By Barry Janoff

UPDATED December 30, 2017: Serena Williams has not been part of an official tennis competition since winning the 2017 Australian Open last January, taking time off to give birth to her first child, Alexis Olympia, this past September and to get married in November.

But Williams is scheduled to be back in play on Dec. 30, facing French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko in the 10th Mubadala World Tennis Championship in the International Tennis Centre at Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi.

The exhibition match will air live on Tennis Channel (8 AM ET).

Of historical importance, the Williams-Ostapenko match marks the first time that women have been allowed to compete in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.

(Editor's Note: Williams lost in her match against Ostapenko on Saturday but seemed intent on focusing on her daughter and getting back into Grand Slam competition.)

“I’m excited, it’s good to be back on the court. This was such a good time for me,” she said during her post-match interview.

“It’s my first time playing in Abu Dhabi so thank you guys for the support. First matches back are always super incredibly hard, especially after having a baby. But it was great, I’m glad I could do it here.”)

The event comes just weeks before the 2018 Australian Open (Jan. 15-28), where Williams will seek to defend her title and add to her record 23 Grand Slam victories.

Ostapenko is ranked No. 7 in the world by the WTA, Williams is No. 22.

With all the attention on Williams, the Mubadala World Tennis Championship (Dec. 28-30) was also scheduled to mark the return to competition for Novak Djokovic.

He was last seen in competition during the Wimbledon quarter-finals in July, when he retired during his match against Tomas Berdych due to problems in his right elbow. He enters the season ranked No. 12 in the world by the ATP.

(Editor's note: Djokovic withdrew from the tournament on Dec. 29, citing ongoing elbow rehabilitation. His spot was taken by Andy Murray, who is recovering from a hip injury suffered earlier this year.

"Unfortunately, the situation with the elbow has not changed for the better since yesterday. I still feel the pain," Djokovic said in a statement. "After the thorough consultations with the medical team, we decided to keep up with the therapies and elbow treatments.

"Only when I'm 100% ready to play, I will be able to come back. I hope it will be soon. I want to thank everyone for patience and understanding,” said Djokovic.)

“I am delighted to be returning to the court in Abu Dhabi for the first time since the birth of my daughter in September,” Williams said in a statement before the match.

“The Mubadala World Tennis Championship has long marked the beginning of the men’s global tennis season and I am excited and honored to be making my comeback as part of the first women to participate in the event.”

According to Brian Lott, chief communications officer for title sponsor Mubadala, “For the tennis fans in the UAE, having Serena here as part of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship weekend is a thrilling opportunity to see even more world-class tennis.

“She’s not only an incredible champion, she’s a role model for millions of athletes all over the world and she joins Jelena in offering the UAE a match worthy of grand slam heritage right in the center of Abu Dhabi,” said Lott.

Other top players include No. 5 ranked Dominic Thiem, Pablo Carreno Busta (No. 10), Kevin Anderson (No. 14) and Andrey Rublev (No. 39).

The players are seeking prize money of $250,000.

Marketing partners include title sponsor Mubadala investment firm, Etihad Airways, Emirates Motor Company, Wilson, Virgin Megastore, Ticketmaster, CNN and IMG.

Tennis Channel said that following its live broadcast of the Williams-Ostapenko match, it would air multiple encore showings.

“I am thrilled to be playing in Abu Dhabi at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship,” Ostapenko said in a statement. “This will be the first time that women have taken part in the event and it is a huge honor to be part of that history after watching the tournament for many years.

“Last season was really incredible for me and I cannot wait to continue the start of my new season at such an amazing event,” said Ostapenko.
