Serena Williams Heading to Super Bowl LIII As Spokesperson For Bumble

By Barry Janoff

January 3, 2019: Serena Williams has signed a deal to become an adviser and spokesperson for Bumble, which operates a relationship app that has more than 47 million users.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner now preparing for the Australian Open this month, will star in a year-long multi-media campaign, “The Ball Is In Her Court,” that is set to break around Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3.

Financial terms of the pact were not shared.

“Serena is the embodiment of what our brand and our company is,” said Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble founder and CEO, in a promo spot unveiling their alliance.

“Women making the first move. Owning who they are. Building their dreams. There is nobody on the planet who exemplifies that more than Serena.”

Wolfe Herd was co-founder of relationship app Tinder, then founded Austin-based Bumble shortly after leaving Tinder in 2014.

“The Ball Is In Her Court,” will tell women that “we have an opportunity to take the first step,” Williams says in the promo spot. “Is it in life? Relationships? Career? It’s in your court and it’s for you to make this decision.”

Bumble said that Williams helped create the campaign.

Actress Privanka Chopra recently joined the company as an investor.

Bumble did not indicate whether Williams had also invested in the brand.

The campaign will break on digital and social media (with the hash tag #InHerCourt).

Bumble did not confirm whether the ad would run on CBS during coverage of Super Bowl LIII from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, but indicated it would be the biggest national media buy in company history.

CBS is asking for $5 million-plus for a 30-second spot.

“We are letting people know we are not afraid,” said Williams. “We no longer want to cower. We want to stand up.

“I would not be where I am today had I let the fear of making the first move hold me back,” she said.

Bumble also has a multi-year jersey-patch deal with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers.

“This partnership has been a dream of mine since the very early days of Bumble when my 'guerilla' marketing tactics included putting stickers on tennis balls,” Whitney Herd posted to her Twitter page. “Welcome to the Hive, Serena Williams. You inspire us all!
