Bed Of Sales: Mom-To-Be Serena Williams Keeps The Marketing Ball In Play

By Barry Janoff

July 13, 2017: Serena Williams is pregnant with her first child and she has an endorsement deal with Tempur-Pedic, but that does not mean she is asleep on the job.

Videos have been posted on social media of her daily tennis workouts. She is part of a just-released campaign from Gatorade ("Secret To Victory," pictured below). She recently joined the board of directors for SurveyMonkey.

She is in a new campaign for Intel.

She is on the cover of the August issue of Vanity Fair.

"It has been interesting. It would be amazing if I can do this in my third trimester,"  said Williams from her home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, during a media conference call this week.

"But that’s not the goal. The goal is to (exercise) and be healthy and have a healthy pregnancy. To stay fit. So I do light workouts to stay fit."

And there was that public tête-à-tête with John McEnroe in June, initiated when he said during an interview that he respects her game but that she’d be ranked "like No. 700 on the men’s tour."

To which she replied via social media, "Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based. I've never played anyone ranked 'there' nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I'm trying to have a baby. Good day sir."

Williams has had an on-going effort with Tempur-Pedic, a mattress brand with which she officially has been aligned with since May, appearing in several ads and other activation, but, as she admitted, with which she has been a customer for about decade.

"I have been an owner (of their mattresses) for over ten years. This collaboration has been great for me," said Williams. "Quality sleep is super crucial as a (soon-to-be) mom and as an athlete.

"Most pregnant women tend not to sleep well. Back problems and all the other factors. But I feel that getting a Tempur-Pedic mattress more than ten years ago prepared me for this moment.”

Williams was eight weeks pregnant when she won the Australian Open this past January, the 23rd of her Grand Slam titles, She didn’t reveal her pregnancy until after the event, which only added to her accomplishment.

"My health is the biggest concern for me," she said. "Before the Australian Open, I spoke with my doctors and asked if it would be okay if I played. And how it would work out.

"Obviously, it worked out great.'

Williams has been on hiatus since the Australian Open, missing the French Open and currently the Wimbledon Grand Slam, but watching her sister, Venus, reach the championship round for the ninth time and the first time since 2009. Five of Venus’ seven Grand Slam wins have come at Wimbledon.

"Venus and I are very close," said Serena. "We are going through this (Serena’s pregnancy and Venus’ title run at Wimbledon) together. I am very happy for her. I like her consistency.

"It’s been a great year for Venus and Roger (Federer). It will continue and go into next year," she said.

Williams’ situation has created a disturbance in the force among the top of the WTA women’s world rankings.

She had been ranked No. 1 for more than 180 weeks going into the 2016 U.S. Open, but when Angelique Kerber won the Open (her second Grand Slam of the year after the 2016 Australian Open) and Williams lost in the semi-final round to Karolina Pliskova, Kerber gained the No. 1 spot.

Several weeks after winning the 2017 Australian Open, Williams ousted Kerber as No. 1 in the world, but when she took time off was again replaced at the top by Kerber.

Based on their showings this year and at the Grand Slam in Wimbledon, Kerber will in turn be replaced at No. 1 by Pliskova after the tournament.

Despite her lengthy time off Williams likely will finish the year ranked among the Top 25. (Editor's Note: She dropped to No. 15 in WTA rankings following Wimbledon.)

Regarding what appears to be a non-stop schedule, Williams — whose due date is expected while the U.S. Open is in progress (Aug. 28-Sept. 10) — said she has a daily routine but is not overdoing her workouts.

"It’s important to do some exercise every day, even if it’s only 20-30 minutes," said Williams. "I’ve been hitting balls, not doing anything crazy."

Regarding her alliance with Tempur-Pedic, Williams said that getting "quality sleep on a quality mattress” has always been important to her, perhaps more so as a mom-to-be.

"Sleep-depravation is a real (problem) for athletes. When you travel and do so much stuff and are expected to compete at a high level, how can you do that without the rest and sleep you need. So it’s important to have the best quality sleep and the best quality mattress."

Williams is expected to return to the tennis circuit in 2018 but did not give a timetable.

"I’ve never had this time off before — or if I have I’ve been injured and it’s really different to be injured as opposed to be expecting," she said. "I’ve been really enjoying my time off and getting ready for this new massive chapter in my life."
