As Serena Returns To No. 1 And Maria To The Court, WTA Reboots Web, Social Media

By Barry Janoff

April 24, 2017: Even as the NBA and NHL playoffs heat up and the NFL Draft looms large this week, the WTA is making news on several fronts.

The WTA said that its flagship Web site for women's tennis would relaunch on April 25 as the "culmination of six months' planning and development, designed to enhance the digital experience for everyone who follows the sport."

This week also marks the return of Serena Williams to No. 1 in the WTA rankings and the return to competition of Maria Sharapova, who has been serving a 15-month suspension due to her use of a banned substance.

The WTA’s Web site plans were unveiled in October during the BNP Paribas WTA Finals.

According to the WTA, through "innovative digital storytelling," the new WTA Networks venture will create a "top destination for tennis news and content, giving fans unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to star athletes and the inner world of tennis."

The reboot comes as the WTA’s new rankings, unveiled today, put Serena Williams back at No. 1.

She is followed by the woman she replaced (and who earlier unseated her) at the top, Angelique Kerber. The Top Ten also includes Karolina Pliskova, Dominika Cilbukova, Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza, Johanna Konta, Agnieska Radwanska, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Madison Keys.

Williams will not be playing in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany, this week due her pregnancy and would fall from No. 1 if Kerber has a strong showing in the Porsche Grand Prix.

Kerber needs to she reach the semifinals at the event to reclaim No. 1, according to the WTA.

Even without Williams, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is in the eyes of tennis and sports people due to the scheduled return to competition of Sharapova following her 15-month suspension by the  International Tennis Federation due her use of a banned substance.

Sharapova won the Porsche Grad Prix in 2012, 2013 and 2014, but Kerber enters as the two-time defending champion.

Sharapova comes in via wild card and unranked by the WTA due to her suspension but No. 22 overall  in the event. The event begins today (April 24) and her suspension officially lifts on April 26.

Sharapova has been drawn to play world No.35 Roberta Vinci of Italy in the first round on Wednesday.

According to the WTA, "In compliance with WTA and the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme rules, Sharapova can participate in a tournament in the week that her suspension ends, providing that the first match that she is scheduled to contest takes place on or after the day on which she is eligible to return to competition."

Sharapova has been posting photos to her social media accounts showing her working out in Germany and preparing for the tournament.

Porsche is one of Sharapova’s lead sponsors. She celebrated her 30th birthday on April 19.

Regarding its revamped Web site, the WTA has been working with The Social Channel, a leading full-service digital marketing, sales and content development company based in New York, on the launch.

"Users can look forward to a cleaner, crisper layout, an improved data service and a significantly upgraded video player."

According to the WTA, "Users can look forward to a cleaner, crisper layout, an improved data service and a significantly upgraded video player. The core functions will remain including rankings, news & features content alongside player, tournament and other tour information.

"WTAtennis.com will also continue to house our exclusive WTA Insider content - including articles, podcasts, interviews and videos — produced by our expert team of writers, editors and producers."

"We do think this is instrumental in building the business," Micky Lawler, WTA president said during a media conference in October. "We are talking to a lot of new partners both global and regional. (Companies) are not sponsors anymore. That term is obsolete. They are partners. We provide a vehicle that speaks directly to women who have buying power of more than $23 trillion. We need to show partners that every dollar invested will turn into $2 dollars.

"This is an opportunity we have never seen," Lawler said. "We want to move WTA from the back pages to front pages. The more relevant we can make the sport and the closer we can get to fans, the more relevant we will be."

The WTA said the reaunch represents stage one of the overhaul of the WTA's digital channels driven by WTA Networks with The Social Channel.
