Looking For Answers, Serena Williams Joins SurveyMonkey To Ask Questions

By Barry Janoff

May 24, 2017: Serena Williams wants to know what’s on your mind.

And that includes such issues as the gender pay gap, the growth of technology and even whether people feel she will have a boy or a girl when she gives birth later this year.

To uncover this information, Williams has joined the board of directors for leading online survey platform SurveyMonkey.

Also joining the board is Brad Smith, CEO and chairman for Intuit.

On her Twitter page, which has some 8.4 million followers, Williams offered, "Thrilled to join the @SurveyMonkey board! Looking forward to working w/the team to ask the important questions #embracetheanswer."

Williams wasted no time in her new position, posting to Twitter, "My first move as board member of @SurveyMonkey is to make a poll (obvi)! I’m curious about you — take my survey.”

"Serena is an activist, marketer, brand builder, and greatest athlete of our time," Zander Lurie, SurveyMonkey’s CEO, said in a statement. "Serena’s voice on the board sends a strong message to our company, investors, and the industry."

According to Lurie, "We want change agents at our table. I’m thrilled that Serena and Brad are joining our team. We have a clear vision of how businesses can turn people’s opinions and voices into actionable data, a strong brand, and exciting product updates in the pipeline.

"We have a deep bench of innovative leaders, and our goals are clear. We’re playing to win," said Lurie.

Williams, currently ranked No. 2 in the world by the WTA, earlier this month unveiled a deal with Tempur Sealy.

Williams is the world’s highest paid women’s athlete, taking in some $20 million from endorsements and more than $9 million in winnings last year, according to industry analysts.

She also has deals that include Nike, IBM, Intel, Gatorade, Beats by Dre, Burlei and Audemars Piuget; equity in Mission and Home Shopping Network and a minority investment in the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

"As a business professional, I’m constantly asking questions. I want to hear the positive and the negative to figure out where I can improve," Williams said in a statement. "I believe in the power of a question and the impact of data.

"Like SurveyMonkey, I’m driven to ask what’s happening, and why. We also share a fierce commitment to letting all voices be heard. This is why SurveyMonkey is the right fit for me — I’m thrilled to join the team," said Williams.

Williams and Smith join board chairman David Ebersman and members Dana L. Evan, Ryan Finley, Lee Fixel, Zander Lurie, Sheryl Sandberg and Ben Spero.

According to SurveyMonkey, Meg Whitman, president and CEO for Hewlett Packard Enterprise; and Bill Veghte, executive chairman, Turbonomic, have stepped down from the board and will remain as advisors to the company moving forward.

Williams is expected to return to tennis competition in 2018 to continue to build on her current 23 Grand Slam titles.
