Sports Authority, 'Under Construction,' Hires CMO

November 13, 2009: The Sports Authority, one of the nation's largest full-line sporting goods retailer, has named Jeffrey Schumacher to the newly created position of evp, CMO and chief strategy officer, effective Nov. 16. Schumacher will oversee all marketing, advertising, private brand strategy, digital/e-commerce, corporate and business development strategy.

Schumacher currently serves as a partner in McKinsey & Company's North American marketing and sales practice.

The appointment comes as Englewood, Col.-based The Sports Authority seeks a new CEO to succeed Doug Morton, who is retiring from the position he has held since 1995 (Morton will remain as chairman of the board). There are more than 460 locations in 45 states.

According to the company, Schumacher's hiring demonstrates Sports Authority's "ongoing commitment to bettering its consumer experience and defining itself as a nationwide leader in the sporting goods retail industry." "We are thrilled to have Jeff coming aboard as we look to the near future and beyond to drive our marketing efforts," David Campisi, president of The Sports Authority, said in a statement. "We have been working with Jeff at the executive level for the past two years and are truly inspired by his passion and vision for the company. I know he will be a great addition to the team."

"Over the past several years I have come to gain an incredible amount of respect for this organization and the amazing amount of talent that exists within it,"  Schumacher said. "This company is forward thinking and incredibly dedicated to improving its consumer experience to drive results. I cannot wait to take the reins and help to reveal the company's full potential."
