Sports Authority, 'Under Construction,' Hires CMO

November 13, 2009: The Sports Authority, one of the nation's largest full-line sporting goods retailer, has named Jeffrey Schumacher to the newly created position of evp, CMO and chief strategy officer, effective Nov. 16. Schumacher will oversee all marketing, advertising, private brand strategy, digital/e-commerce, corporate and business development strategy.

Schumacher currently serves as a partner in McKinsey & Company's North American marketing and sales practice.

The appointment comes as Englewood, Col.-based The Sports Authority seeks a new CEO to succeed Doug Morton, who is retiring from the position he has held since 1995 (Morton will remain as chairman of the board). There are more than 460 locations in 45 states.

According to the company, Schumacher's hiring demonstrates Sports Authority's "ongoing commitment to bettering its consumer experience and defining itself as a nationwide leader in the sporting goods retail industry."
