Topps Adds Kershaw, Verlander Other Collectible Cards To Sports Crate Booty

May 18, 2017: Baseball cards are usually taken out of boxes to be collected.

Topps is now putting cards into boxes to be collected.

The iconic trading card and memorabilia company has signed a deal with Loot Crate, which delivers monthly boxes of officially licensed goods, apparel and curated VIP experiences to subscribers, to be part of the new Sports Crate platform.

Sports Crate, which recently unveiled an official alliance with MLB and the MLB Players’ Assn., is currently working with ten MLB teams to ship such licensed goods as bobble heads, action figures and apparel; collectibles and unique experiences specific to each ball club.

Topps said it would design MLB cards specifically for Sports Crate, beginning this month with a "Bringing the Heat" themed crate that focuses on each participating team's pitchers.

According to Topps, the 2017 Topps Sports Crate Baseball cards collection will have two different sets of numbers, with the first set featuring one card for each team. The complete master set corresponds with the second number and has 50 cards.

This collaboration also includes a special limited foil board set that would be randomly inserted in 10% of Sports Crate team-focused subscriptions, "making them highly sought after by collectors and fans alike," according to Topps.

The initial ten teams include the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers.

According to sports collecting and memorabilia company Beckett, the May Topps Sports Crate checklist includes Madison Bumgarner (Giants), Danny Duffy (Royals), Cole Hamels (Rangers), Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers), Jon Lester (Cubs), Rick Porcello (Red Sox), Noah Syndergaard (Mets), Masahiro Tanaka (Yankees), Justin Verlander (Tigers) and Adam Wainwright (Cardinals).

Each player is also expected to be represented by an action figure in each respective team box.

"Trading cards hold timeless memories for fans and we are excited to partner with Topps to bring these exclusive Topps Sports Crate Baseball cards directly to them," Doug Wadleigh, svp and GM for Los Angeles-based Sports Crate, said in a statement. "We're giving fans an added thrill to unwrap within their monthly unboxing experience.

Each subsequent box will have its own MLB theme, potentially including BBQ and Road Warrior.

Loot Crate said its Sports Crates would contain "VIP one-of-the-kind experiences (such as) attending a Boston Red Sox game" in Fenway Park.

Founded in 2012, Loot Crate also has alliances including Marvel, Cartoon Network and Overwatch — often timed to the release of new movies, TV shows, video games or other high-profile events.

There also is a monthly Slam Crate via a deal with WWE, which began this past October.

According to Clay Luraschi, Topps vp-product development, "Sports Crate offers a unique fan experience and we're excited to have Topps be a part of it. It's a natural fit."

Loot Crate said that Sports Crates are currently available on a first-come, first-serve basis and are limited to ensure their collectability. Sports Crates start at $39.99 per month and a five-month Season Pass subscription, which includes an exclusive MLB figure, is available for $179.99 per season. (Details here.)
