Survey: Knicks, Lakers, Celtics, Clippers Most Expensive Teams To Visit In NBA

By Barry Janoff

November 5, 2015: The New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers are two of the most storied franchises in the NBA, if not all of sports.

Last season, the two teams were a combined 38-126.

But that has not prevented the Knicks and Lakers from topping the list of the most expensive games for fans to attend based on the average cost of a ticket and the overnight cost of a nearby 3-star hotel.

To attend a New York Knicks game, a couple is expected to spend $430, which accounts for two tickets at an average of $123 a piece and $184, on average, for a double-room near Madison Square Garden, home of the Knicks, according to a new survey from TravelMag.com.

The Lakers come in second with a total average price for two tickets and a double-room near Staples Center of $377 per game. The Boston Celtics come in third with an average cost of $376 — $71 for tickets, $376 for a room — which TravelMag.com said is "due to the cost of lodging in Boston, which is the highest among all NBA destinations."

It might pay for hoops fans in New York to visit Brooklyn rather than Manhattan. The average cost to watch a game of the Brooklyn Nets is $299 — $66 average for two tickets, $167 for a double-room near Barclays Center.

And people who want to see the Los Angeles Clippers, who share the Staples Center with the Lakers, would save money on tickets, with the average for a pair coming in at $71, but spend the same on a hotel, with the average total coming in at $329.

The top costliest packages also include the Chicago Bulls ($327), Miami Heat ($304), Orlando Magic ($301), Denver Nuggets ($295), New Orleans Hornets ($249), Golden State Warriors ($243) and Philadelphia 76ers ($243).

In compiling the rankings, TravelMag.com said it "analyzed the cost of admission plus the cost of lodging for each NBA team. Specifically considered were the average ticket prices of the past season, as established by the statistics portal Statista.com, as well as the typical rate for a double room (1 night, minimum) in a 3-star hotel) close to the respective arenas."

The cost of lodging represents the average nightly rate for the cheapest available double-room during the month of November. Only such hotels rated at least three stars and those being located less than one mile from the respective arenas have been taken into account, according to TravelMag.com.

On the opposite end from the Knicks and Lakers, fans of the Atlanta Hawks will spend, on average, only $162 per couple to attend a home game ($35 for tickets) and stay overnight at a nearby hotel ($92), the lowest average rate among all 30 teams.

Also very affordable, per TravelMag.com are the Detroit Pistons ($164), Charlotte Hornets ($180), Utah Jazz ($180) and Indiana Pacers ($181) per couple.
