Olympic Channel: Home Of Team USA Gets Programming Clarity As Opening Day Nears

By Barry Janoff

July 5, 2017: The Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA already has a scheduled launch date — July 15 — and now it has an opening day line-up.

Programming will begin with a 30-minute Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA Launch Special (6:30 AM ET) hosted by NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico, who was named NBC’s prime time Olympic host earlier this year.

The show, which will have several encore presentations throughout the week, "will guide viewers through a preview of what they can expect to see on the new network," according to NBC.

The Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA is slated to launch in 35 million households, including most subscribers of Altice, AT&T DirecTV, Comcast, Spectrum, and Verizon at launch.

The linear channel will also be available at launch on such streaming services as DirecTV Now, Fubo, Hulu, Sony PlayStation Vue and YouTube TV.

In addition, the Channel will be live-streamed on OlympicChannel.com, the Olympic Channel app, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

Launch day programming is also scheduled to feature:

• A Team USA athlete roundtable with Olympic medalists Shaun White, Kelly Clark and Gus Kenworthy, moderated by Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski

• Previews of the FINA World Swimming Championships and IAAF World Track & Field Championships, which will supply significant programming during the network’s first few weeks

• A preview of upcoming documentaries from the IOC’s global Olympic Channel original programming

• Behind-the-scenes content and social media elements from NBC Olympics’ promotional shoot for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA programming complements 400 hours of Olympic Sports programming already scheduled to air in 2017 on NBC and NBCSN, and streamed on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app, as well as on the distributors’ on demand and digital platforms.

The formation of Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA was unveiled in December 2016 as a collaboration among the IOC, USOC and NBCU to "create a comprehensive Olympic content and distribution partnership in the United States."

The partnership complements the Olympic Channel global digital platform, which was launched by the IOC following the Closing Ceremony of the 2016 Summer Games in Rio.

“Through this exciting new partnership with the USOC and NBCUniversal, we will ensure that U.S. audiences are more closely connected with the Olympic Movement through a more personalized experience,” Mark Parkman, general manager of the Olympic Channel, said in a statement during the unveiling.

Advertising opportunities will be available to "IOC top-tier partners and USOC partners," said Gary Zenkel, president, NBC Olympics, during a recent media conference call. "There may be opportunities for National Governing Body partners. That will be our focus."

"We are in active discussion with our partners regarding sponsorship of the Olympic Channel," said Lisa Baird, CMO for USOC .

Timo Lumme, managing director for IOC Television, said the IOC is currently in the process of renewing or extending deals with some current top-tier partners "and is also fielding inquiries from new sources," some of which may include Olympic Channel sponsorship deals.

Founding Partners to date supporting the IOC's Olympic Channel are worldwide partners Alibaba Group, Bridgestone and Toyota.

The first month of programming on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA is scheduled to include coverage of the 2017 FINA World Swimming and Diving Championships from Budapest, Hungary; the IAAF Track and Field World Championships from London, England, in August; and the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships from Vienna, Austria, in July and August.

It will also include Olympic-themed original content created by all three parties, such as original programs produced by filmmakers from around the world commissioned by the global Olympic Channel; and archival footage from the IOC and NBCU’s libraries of Olympic features and documentaries.

There also will be original Team USA programming produced by the USOC that provides "authentic, wide-ranging and athlete-focused coverage of the Olympic Movement in the United States."
