NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

July 9, 2018: There are four nations left standing in the quest for the 2018 FIFA World Cup trophy, but NBCUniversal division Telemundo Deportes has already claimed a number of crowns among TV viewers and digital users.

With the month-along tournament down down semi-finals between France-Belgium (July 10) and England-Croatia (July 11) ‚ with the Final scheduled for July 15 — Telemundo Deportes said it “continues to deliver big numbers, drawing more viewers than ever to the network’s linear and digital platforms.”

Through the quarterfinals (60 matches), Telemundo Deportes’ 2018 World Cup presentation has reached 34.7 million TV viewers — already exceeding the Spanish-language reach for the full 2010 tournament (32.2 million), according to the network.

To this point in the tournament, Telemundo has reached nearly 55% of the U.S. Hispanic population.

Telemundo said its TV coverage has also set records for the network’s “most-watched daytime windows 67% of the time on their respective days of the week (14 of 21 match days).”

Equally impressive, Telemundo Deportes said its digital presentation has reached 14.4 million unique users, generating a record-setting 125 million live-streams and 1.87 billion live minutes viewed.

Telemundo said that already makes the 2018 World Cup the “biggest live-stream sports event in Spanish-language history.”

Telemundo Deportes’ digital presentation has delivered an 11% lift to the Total Audience Delivery with an Average Minute Audience of 210,000 viewers. The TAD average per match is 2.2 million viewers.

In 2011, Telemundo Deportes won the exclusive Spanish-speaking rights to broadcast the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in the United States, paying an estimated $600 million, according to industry analysts.

During a media conference call prior to the start of the World Cup, Ray Warren, president of Telemundo Deportes, said, “We have been looking forward to Russia 2018 since 2011 when Telemundo, with the support of NBCUniversal, became the new Spanish-language home of the FIFA World Cup.

“This will be a historic World Cup in many ways,” said Warren. “We are harmonizing all of NBCU's assets into production and coverage . . . This will be the most exciting World Cup coverage ever."
