Shoot, Score: The General (And Shaq) Ensure 'Uncle Drew' Has Marketing Power

By Barry Janoff

May 10, 2018: Auto insurance company The General has joined the growing list of brands associated with the upcoming hoop-driven film, Uncle Drew, with NBA star Kyrie Irving in the title role.

The alliance with The General is organic: It’s lead spokesperson is NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, who is among the lead players in Uncle Drew.

The General is supporting with a multi-media campaign, including TV spots — one with O’Neal in his “Big Fella” character from the film — Internet and social media.

The spots will run during NBA Playoff games on ESPN and the NBA on TNT, as well as other sports and entertainment programming. (More organic alliances: O'Neal is a commentator/analyst on TNT's Inside the NBA.)

Uncle Drew is scheduled to be released on Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment label on June 29.

“Shaquille has been the star of our TV and radio ads for two years, and having recently extended our partnership with him for another three years, we are excited about bringing the collaboration to the next level,”  Amy DiMaio, senior manager of advertising for The General, said in a statement.

“Connecting our brand with a major motion picture from Lionsgate and with Shaq is the perfect way for us to explore marketing in this space and we really look forward to this collaboration.”

It is no surprise that Uncle Drew is getting significant support from Madison Avenue: The character of Uncle Drew came to life via a Pepsi Max campaign in 2012 featuring Irving as a 75-year-old streetball legend “known for his amazing handles and ability to go to the rim.”

According to John Hollar, COO and president for Nashville-based The General, “A partnership like the one with Lionsgate’s Uncle Drew allows us to expand our reach to people that may not be as familiar with The General and how we can help them.”

Apparently, Uncle Drew likes to align with high-ranking officers.

General Mills' Wheaties has unveiled a limited-edition box with Irving on one side and Uncle Drew on the other (available in late May).

Irving marketing partner Nike has also collaborated with Wheaties for a very limited-edition signature Kyrie shoe package (100), with Wheaties-inspired shoes in a shoe box adorned with Wheaties packaging along with a mini-box of Wheaties, a cereal bowl and a spoon.

The two spots from The General feature film action interspersed with animated shots of the insurance company’s self-titled mascot.

In Everyone Scores, we get what seems like a standard trailer for the movie until a scene in the movie’s Makin’ The Cut barbershop, in which The General appears and says, “You don’t need high scorers like Uncle Drew for everything.”

Shaq, seated in a barbershop chair in character as Big Fella, breaks character and says, “He’s right. The General can insure almost any car and any driver. Even if you have a less-than-perfect record. Just go to The General.com for a free, anonymous quote in minutes.”

In Everything To Prove, the pitch is more obvious, with a voiceover offering, “Five retired players led by Uncle Drew . . .  and one General, with low-cost auto insurance for them all.Get a quote from The General . . . and see Uncle Drew in theaters June 29.”

Among other current and former pro basketball stars in the movie are Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie.
