• Octagon and the National Women’s Soccer League have signed a multi-tier consulting partnership, in which Octagon’s Global Media Rights Consulting and Marketing divisions will "advise the NWSL on its league media rights, sponsorship, and marketing." “The growth of the NWSL over the past six years has been tremendous, and the league, its teams and players show absolutely no sign of slowing down,” Christine Franklin, SVP, Marketing, Octagon, said via the firm.

• The Professional Baseball Agreement between MLB and minor league teams expires at the end of the 2020 season. But if a new MLB proposal were to become reality, more than three dozen cities with affiliated minor league teams will lose those teams a year from now and thousands of minor league players will be out of work as well. • Halloween this year is Oct. 31, and retailers, marketers and consumers are ready for another season of trick-or-treat. Total spend on Halloween 2019 is expected to reach $8.8 billion according to the National Retail Federation, Washington, DC. Full story here.

The Rock, Lindsey Vonn Drive Under Armour Iron Paradise Multi-Platform Campaign

March 21, 2019: March Madness is everywhere, including at Under Armour, which picked the first full days of the NCAA Men’s Div. I Basketball Tournament to drop its latest Project Rock collection.

Of course, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson at the helm, it’s just another day in marketing paradise.

“Get hyped boys & girls,” Johnson posted on his social media accounts. “My new Project Rock Under Armour Bend Boundaries Collection is HERE!

“Enter the Iron Paradise & see your transformation begin. If you turn into a muscular, magical unicorn — you’re welcome.”

Under Armour’s new Project Rock collection comes with Johnson, recently signed Lindsey Vonn and a bevy of tag lines, supported by a multi-media effort, all intended to motivate elite athletes as well as the hoi polloi to work harder in all aspects of life.

Of particular interest, new releases include more color ways of the Project Rock 1 shoe that dropped in May 2018 andsold out in less than 24 hours; and the UA HOVR Phantom, the first Project Rock women's training shoe.

With the addition of Vonn to the Project Rock team, the line includes the shoes and collection of other workout and sports gear for women.

The overall collection also has T-shirts, hoodies, wireless headsets, duffle bags, backpacks, hats and socks.

“I love finding my boundaries and then pushing right past them in the new UA HOVR Phantom Project Rock — The FIRST EVER women's shoe in the collection!,” Vonn posted to her social media platform.

According to Under Armour, “What makes Dwayne so different is his mindset and willingness to push those boundaries, to bend expectations through pure will and perseverance, one inch at a time, to a point where no one thought he could be: a WWE superstar, an entertainment icon, one of the most influential people on the planet.

“The Project Rock Bend Boundaries collection represents that mentality. The drive Dwayne has when he wakes up every day, the push to do better every time he steps into the gym. A mentality he hopes to inspire all of his fans to embrace.”

Marketing support includes several intense videos of The Rock and Vonn working out in the gym, aka the Iron Paradise.

Tag lines include “Project Rock,” “Bend Boundaries,” “Build The Belief," "Iron Paradise" and “Find the Boundaries. Push through.’

Social media plays a strategic role, driven by Johnson’s popularity.

Johnson, who began his partnership with Under Armour in January 2016, has been a rock-solid frontman for Under Armour, which over the past couple of years has had to deal with financial challenges and changes in its executive and marketing departments.

In addition to his film work — including the upcoming “Fast & Furious” spinoff, “Hobbs & Shaw”,” through which he is the highest-paid actor in Hollywood, taking in more than $124 million last year, according to Forbes — he has a massive following on social media, including more than 133 million on Instagram,  57 million on Facebook and 13.3 million on Twitter.

Vonn brings her own crowd: more than a million followers on Twitter, nearly 1.4 million on Facebook, 1.8 million on Instagram.

"I am so excited to be on team Project Rock,” Vonn, who just retired from competitive skiing, said in a video posted to the Under Armour Project Rock site.

“What I find so inspiring about Dwayne is that he always gives 100% in everything that he does. He basically stands for 100% authenticity and 100% effort.”

According to Under Armour, “Since Dwayne first partnered with Under Armour, there has been one singular goal — to reflect Dwayne's attitude and WILL into training product; apparel built to withstand everything the hardest worker in the room could throw at them, so that everyday people can build their own belief and Bend Boundaries.”
