The World According To Conor McGregor: 'Effin' Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey

By Barry Janoff

September 21, 2018: The media conference for UFC 229, held in New York’s Radio City Music Hall yesterday (Sept. 20) was officially presented by AutoTrader.

But not according to Conor McGregor, there to promote his headline UFC bout against Khabib Nurmagomedov, scheduled for Oct. 6 in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“Let’s all raise a glass of Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey,” he shouted, standing behind a dais with a bottle of the product that he endorses as founder, chairman and majority owner of Eire Born Spirits. “Proper No. Twelve. That’s what I’m talking about. We came here to have a buzz with this.”

McGregor then said he anticipated not being able to bring his full-size bottle of Proper No. Twelve into Radio City Music Hall by stashing a smaller flask-size bottle in his sport jacket pocket.

“I wish I could have a glass or a cup here to raise a toast with my Proper Irish Whiskey. If not, I’ll start drinking out of the bottle. And if the bottle gets empty, I don’t know what I’ll do (to) this man (Khabib) on an empty bottle. You know what I’m like.”

He soon got a couple of drinking glasses and filled them with Proper No. Twelve, sharing a drink with UFC president and media conference moderator (and referee) Dana White before offering one to Khabib to celebrate his birthday, coincidently the day of the press conference.

Khabib, who is Muslim, refused, saying, “I don’t drink.”

Ultimately, following numerous more references to the product, White was asked whether Proper No. 12 Irish Whiskey was now an official partner with UFC 229. White smiled and said, “It is. It is.”

McGregor then jumped on the question, adding that the brand would have its logo in the Octagon during the event.

"You bet your bollocks it is," McGregor said.”On the canvas. On the canvas. Like (Khabib's) blood will be on the canvas."

Among the other real news that came out of the media event was that McGregor has signed on for five more UFC fights after UFC 229, and that Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey would be partner for each one.

The topic of the media conference being closed to the public by UFC — disputed by McGregor on Twitter who invited his fans to attend, with a bottle of Proper No. 12 Irish Whiskey being the price of admission — did not escape McGregor’s harangue.

“If I was an owner and part of the promotion, I would have had the (effin) fans in this arena,” he said. “Where’s the (elfin) fans at?! That’s who we fight for. That’s who pays the bills. That’s who deserves this show . . . “

Then, looking at White, who was the driving force behind the ban, directing people instead to watch the media conference on a mega-screen in Times Square, “I come here to do this bullshit. Bring the fans. (But) I didn’t get what I asked (for), so here we are.”

“I didn’t want any problems in New York today,” White then said.

The media event was also shown live on ESPNews and various online sites, including YouTube, which at its peak had more than 850,000 viewers.

Khabib was mostly low-key and stoic but became vocal over the incident in April when McGregor smashed the window of a bus in which Nurmagomedov and his entourage were sitting following a UFC 223 media event in Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

McGregor, said his action was in retaliation to a situation involving Khabib and crew against McGregor’s UFC teammate Artem Lobov.

in July, McGregor pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was fined and put on probation, but did not have to serve any jail time.

Khabib did get to tout his own skills and confidence, claiming that after their fight on Oct. 6, McGregor “will have to go back to boxing,” referencing McGregor’s fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in August 2017 — which also was the last time that McGregor fought.

His last UFC bout was in November 2016.

“I made a helluva lot of money from boxing,” said McGregor, whose take from the Mayweather Jr. fight was upward of $100 million, according to sports analysts.

Replied Khabib, “He’s here for the money. I’m here for my legacy.”

White has been touting UFC 229 as the biggest in UFC history, claiming at the media event, “We are trending up to 2.5 million pay-per-view buys.”

That would set a UFC mark, surpassing the 1.5 million PPVs for UFC 202 in August 2016 according to UFC, which featured McGregor vs. Nate Diaz.
