Ticketmaster NFL Survey: More Women Buyers, Rams Fans Travel The Farthest

By Barry Janoff

January 19, 2019: The NFL is loaded with statistics on which teams and players are best, worst, up-and-coming or happening not at all.

A new survey from Ticketmaster,  the official marketplace for the NFL, has some stats regarding the people who ride the ebb and flow of the league’s pros and cons — its fans.

Among them: More women are buying tickets to games, people on average travel nearly 300 miles to watch a game and 41% said they watch every single game of their favorite team during the season.

“At Ticketmaster, we love celebrating what makes someone an #OfficialFan — and ensuring that they have the best live event experiences possible,” Greg Economou, chief commercial officer and head of sports, Ticketmaster North America, said via the company.

On the cusp of Super Bowl LIII, Ticketmaster, under its umbrella “Official Fan” initiative — an “interactive consumer campaign celebrating the personalities and diverse behaviors that help define NFL fandom” — said it has “uncovered new NFL fan behaviors based on ticket purchases this season.”

Among the findings:

• This season saw a major increase in female buyers, reporting a 61% YoY increase in women purchasing NFL tickets.

• During the regular season, an NFL fan travels an average of 296 miles for a game.

Among the NFL Final Four:

Los Angeles Rams fans travel an average of 483 miles for games.

New Orleans Saints fans travel an average of 444 miles.

New England Patriots fans travel an average of 433.

Kansas City Chiefs fans traveling an average of 289 miles.

• On average, a fan of the NFL spends 46 hours a month thinking, talking or reading about their favorite NFL team.

• 41% say they will watch every single game of their favorite team during the season.

• 79% have been a fan of their favorite team since they were born.

• 84% of respondents said that when their team is playing, they stop everything to watch live.

And in the glass half full department, 75% have no doubt that their team will win the Super Bowl next year.

Ticketmaster has partnered with four current and former NFL stars for its #OfficialFan campaign.

They are Mohamed Sanu (WR, Atlanta Falcons, Ed McCaffrey (former Denver Broncos), Deion Branch (former Patriots and Seattle Seahawks WR and MVP of Super Bowl XXXIX) and Brian Westbrook (former RB Philadelphia Eagles).

The players are participating in various aspects of the campaign, including fan appearances and social media shoutouts.

Los Angeles-based Ticketmaster said the survey was conducted online within the U.S. between Dec. 5-10, 2018 among 2,000 adults, ages 18 and older, who self-identified as NFL fans.
