Back To The Future: Justin (Sans Janet) Returns To Super Bowl Halftime Show

By Barry Janoff

October 22, 2017: Given enough time, it seems, almost everyone can be forgiven.

During Super Bowl XXXVIII on Feb. 1, 2004, Justin Timberlake performed during the halftime show with Janet Jackson, and while singing “Rock Your Body,” the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” move exposed Jackson’s right breast and nipple shield to a national audience on CBS.

Fines, accusations of indecency and an investigation by the FCC made Timberlake and Jackson persona non grata among executives planning NFL-related entertainment.

But that was then and this is now.

Calling him “one of the greatest all around entertainers in the history of show business,” Timberlake has been unveiled as the lead performer for the Pepsi Halftime Show for Super Bowl LII on Feb. 4, 2018, in U.S. Bank Stadium, home for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.

The news was shared by NBC, which will air Super Bowl LII, during half time of its Sunday Night Football game between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons.

Timberlake also performed during the Super Bowl XXXV half time show in 2001, sponsored by E-Trade,as a member of ’NSYNC (along with Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Nelly and Mary J. Blige). This makes him the first entertainer to perform at three different Super Bowl half time shows, according to NBC.

Timberlake is married to actress Jessica Biel, who was born in Ely, Minn.

“I’ve already watched a ton of (half time shows) just to make sure that we’re not pulling out any gags you know — people are flying, and Lady Gaga jumped from the top of the stadium or something,” Timberlake said in an exclusive interview with Mike Tirico that aired at halftime of Sunday Night Football.

“I don’t know, man. I’m 36 now. I don’t know how much of that I can do anymore,” said Timberlake.

Tirico then asked, “At any point in the ask, did they say, ‘Hey, just the last time there was a little wardrobe thing. Can we make sure that doesn’t happen? And as long as you’re good with that, were good with you.’”

Timberlake laughed and said, “That won’t happen this time. There was a little bit of that. But . . . no, Mike, that’s not going to happen.”

The news came with a preview spot from Pepsi, which shows Timberlake performing on various stages singing several of his hit songs, with text that he has ”10 Grammys, 4 Emmys, 1 Oscar nomination" (for Best Song for “Can't Stop The Feeling!” from the soundtrack of the 2016 DreamWorks Animation movie, Trolls).

it also came with a teaser spot with Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon, with Timberlake asking Fallon, “Do you have the time?” And Fallon answering, “Do YOU have the time?” “I do have the time.” “You do half time?” “I do have time.” “You do half time?” “I do half time.” “You’re doing halftime at the Super Bowl!?” “I’m doing the half time show at the Super Bowl!!!!”

Jay-Z was asked to headline the show but tuned it down, according to numerous reports.

This will be Pepsi’s sixth time as Super Bowl half time sponsor and seventh overall: Super Bowl XLI (2007) and each of the past five Super Bowls dating back to Super Bowl XLVII (2013), including Super Bowl LI when Pepsi Zero Sugar was the sponsor.

Super Bowl LI this past February with Lady Gaga attracted 117.5 million viewers (Fox), Super Bowl 50 (2016) with Beyoncé, Bruno Mars and Coldplay attracted 115.5 million (CBS).

The most-watched half time show was during Super Bowl XLIX (2015) with Katy Perry, which attracted 118.5 million viewers (NBC).

Pepsi said that leading up to Super Bowl LII, people could visit for “behind-the-scenes looks into Timberlake's journey to the Pepsi Super Bowl LII Halftime Show, as well as other surprises along the way.”

“What I really want to do is take the opportunity to put together a performance that feels like it unifies,” Timberlake told Tirico. “I feel like that would be the ultimate accomplishment.

"And then the icing on the cake is at some point, within that 12 minutes, that everybody is shaking their booty."

The Pepsi Super Bowl LII Halftime Show  is an NFL Network Production.

Super Bowl LII will be on NBC just days before the network begins coverage of the Winter Olympics in South Korea (Feb. 9-25).
