October 28, 2021: As part of its “Eat Fresh, Refresh” campaign, Subway said it is testing a one-net-carb bread option as part of a new product partnership with food tech startup Hero Labs.
The item will be promoted by Tom Brady, who appears in the on-going campaign and is an investor in Hero Labs, along with Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman’s Thirty Five Ventures, and musicians The Weeknd and Lil Baby.
The alliance is noteworthy because Brady has been called out by the brand itself because he doesn’t eat bread, as pointed out in a spot with Stephen Curry (“Do you even eat bread?” “Steph, it’s a commercial,” says Brady) and another called “Bready.”
However, in a new spot posted to social media, Brady offers, “You’re boy isn’t the biggest bread guy. But there’s a new bread that even I can eat. Hero bread: 0 grams sugar, 12 grams of protein, 26 grams of fiber and only 100 calories.
“Now I’m pumped that I can get back to bread. All because of Hero. Truly unbelievable.”
The spot closes with Brady about to take a bite of a Subway Hero sandwich.
Subway said it is currently testing Hero Bread sandwich rolls for a limited time in Savannah, GA; Des Moines, IA; Colorado Springs, CO; and Boise, ID.
Starting Nov. 5, people outside of those cities can vote on where the Hero bread test might expand.
"Great bread is part of Subway's DNA, and the addition of Hero Bread to our menu is not only the next evolution of that, but also helps more people enjoy their favorite sandwich at Subway," Carrie Walsh, Subway CMO, said via the company.
"We look forward to introducing Hero Bread, adding more locations around the country, and offering our guests even more choices."
The campaign also features Serena Williams, Megan Rapinoe, Charles Barkley, Russell Williams, Marshawn Lynch and recently added NFL rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Hero Labs, Inc. is a San Francisco-based food tech startup, said it has raised more than $30 million in capital from partners that also include Beyond Meat, GreatPoint Ventures, DNS Capital and Cleveland Avenue and Marc Benioff's Time Ventures, Future Positive and Electric Feel Ventures.
