Brady Confirms Position As G.O.A.T.: Greatest NFL Salesman Of All Time

By Barry Janoff

August 1, 2017: Tom Brady is considered by many to be the greatest quarterback and one of the NFL’s greatest players of all time.

He might also be its greatest salesman.

Brady, who led the New England Patriots to victory in Super Bowl LI, tops the new list of the "Top 50 Best-Selling Player Merchandise," which covers Q1 2017, March 1-May 31, released by the NFL Players Assn.

The list is based on overall sales of all NFL player licensed products via online and traditional retail outlets as reported by more than 70 NFLPA licensees.

According to the NFLPA, "Brady’s ongoing sales strength is unrivaled, as he has been a consistent presence at the top of the sales list over the last 13 quarters. Over that span, he has now been No. 1 four times, and inside the top three spots on nine different occasions."

In specific categories, Brady was the most popular among collectors of life-size vinyl decals from Fathead, led in pet apparel from Pets First, in tailgate tables (Victory Tailgate), cornhole toss games (Wild Sports), pint glass drinkware (Boelter), Masterpieces Puzzles, Forever Collectibles and T-shirts.

In addition he was second in sales in commemorative plaques from Highland Mint (behind Aaron Rodgers), socks from FBF Originals (behind Odell Beckham Jr.) and Funko vinyl collectible products (behind Derek Carr).

Specific sales figures were not shared.

Brady lead a group of 14 quarterbacks among the Top 50, according to NFLPA, including six among the Top 12: No. 3 Dak Prescott (Dallas Cowboys), No. 5 Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks), No. 7 Rodgers (Green Bay Packers), No. 11 Carr (Oakland Raiders) and No. 12 Carson Wentz (Philadelphia Eagles).

However, for the first time, wide receivers were the most-represented position players with 16 on the list. There also were eight running backs and three tight ends also earned spots. Defenders had nine players represented.

The Seahawks had the most players among the NFLPA Top 50 Players Sales list with five players, the fifth consecutive quarter where the team has had at least five players on the list.

The Cowboys, Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers each had four players among the Top 50.

All of Dallas’ players were in the Top 10: No. 2. Ezekiel Elliott,  No. 3. Prescott, No. 6. Dez Bryant and No. 10. Jason Witten.

The Top Ten also saw the return of Marshawn Lynch, running back now with the Raiders at No. 4, making his return to the Top 50 list for the first time since the 2015-16 year-end list when he was with Seattle.

The Top Ten also included No. 8. Odell Beckham (New York Giants) and 9. Antonio Brown (Pittsburgh Steelers).

Steelers running back James Conner (No. 24) was the highest-ranked rookie on the list, followed by Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson (No. 28).

The Top 50 Player Sales List is released quarterly by the NFLPA, via its licensing and marketing arm NFL Players Inc.

It is based on overall sales of all NFL player licensed products via online and traditional retail outlets as reported by more than 70 NFLPA licensees.

They include Fanatics, Nike, Outerstuff, 500 Level, Forever Collectibles, Funko, Fathead, Hallmark, McFarlane Toys, FBF Originals and Wincraft.

Licensed product categories include men’s, women’s and youth game jerseys; as well as T-shirts, wall decals, figurines, vinyl collectibles, bobbleheads, plush dolls, drinkware, socks, holiday ornaments, and novelties.
