January 2019: In August, State Farm, one of the NBA’s most active partners, extended its reach in the league with a naming rights deal for the arena that is home to the Atlanta Hawks.

State Farm Arena had been known as Philips Arena since the venue opened in 1999.

Although specific terms of the deal were not disclosed, they were put at 20 years for $175 million by industry analysts.

One week later, State Farm added another jewel to its roster, signing an 18-year naming rights deal to the home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, converting the former University of Phoenix Stadium in to State Farm Stadium.

“We were intent on finding a relationship that was an ideal fit with our organization and this community in terms of values, priorities and culture,” Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said via the team.

“With State Farm, we absolutely did that.”

According to Bidwell, “While this is a comprehensive marketing agreement, there will be a major focus on community programs that will have a positive impact across our state. State Farm is one of the most-respected and recognizable brands in the world and Phoenix is fortunate to be one of its three hub markets.”

State Farm’s NFL connection also includes an on-going campaign with Aaron Rodgers, quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.

State Farm Arena, also home to the WNBA's Atlanta Dream, officially opened its doors in October following the completion of a $192.5 million-dollar renovation timed to celebrate the team’s 50th year in Atlanta.

In addition to signage outside and within the venue, State Farm has supported with multi-media marketing and fan activation.

State Farm and the Hawks will also “co-create impactful community initiatives and bolster existing community and social responsibility programs.”

“This decision symbolizes our pledge to making a difference in communities, building our brand locally and nationally, and ultimately growing State Farm,” Michael Tipsord, State Farm chairman and CEO, said via the company.

State Farm, which has been an NBA partner since 2010, has featured numerous NBA stars in its marketing campaign, most recently Chris Paul and James Harden.

State Farm also sponsors the NBA 2K eSports league.

State Farm is the most active sponsor in college sports, with 72% of NCAA properties with a sponsor in the insurance category reporting an alliance with State Farm, according to ESP Properties 2017-18 College Sponsorship Spend Report.

Among its bevy of college-related activation is College GameDay Covered by State Farm on ESPN; the State Farm All-Star Football Challenge, which pits top college football players in a series of skills competitions; the State Farm Champions Classic with helps to open the college hoops season; and the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships.

State Farm entered the 2018-19 NBA season with a multi-platform push that included new spots and new activation.

Three spots — “RoboAgent,” “Nice Moments” and “19K Jerseys” — broke during NBA Tip-Off presented by Kia starring Chris Paul and James Harden of the Houston Rockets and actor Oscar Nuñez reprising his role as State Farm agent Cole Perez.

The spots, with the tag “Here to help life go right,”  are airing across NBA media partners ESPN, TNT and NBA TV, with digital and social media support. Lead agency is Translation, LLC.

The campaign will continue through the NBA season with new work during such jewel events as such NBA Christmas Day, All-Star Weekend — where State Farm has been presenting sponsor for All-Star Saturday Night since 2010— and the post-season.
