Topps Still Holds The Cards (But No Gum) In New MLB Extension Thru 2025

By Barry Janoff

July 12, 2018: The Topps Company was founded in 1938, and has had a partnership with MLB since 1952.

The official alliance between MLB and Topps will now continue through 2025 with an extention of their exclusive global partnership for MLB-licensed trading cards.

Financial terms were not released.

Topps currently is working on its presence during MLB All-Star Game Week and the All-Star FanFest presented by Geico.

“Topps has always strived to be at the forefront of innovation,” David Leiner, global GM-sports and entertainment for Topps, said in a statement.

“We constantly look for new ways to bring joy and excitement to baseball fans whether they have been collecting for decades or just starting out. Our exclusive MLB license gives us the opportunity to continue as the category leader.”

Topps said it has had great success with Topps NOW, launched in 2016, which captures images of MLB events and immediately puts them on cards that are available at the company’s Web site for 24 hours. Topps said it sold one million NOW cards through the 2017 season.

Topps this season unveiled The Living Set (Jackie Robinson picture above), an on-going set with cards of current players and legends based on its iconic 1953 set, with new cards available online for a week before going out of print.

Beyond traditional cards and unique releases with autographs or pieces of uniforms or bats, Topps has provided such opportunities for people as the Topps Make Your Pro Debut contest (someone becomes a Minor League Baseball player for a day), trips to the T-Mobile Home Run Derby and All-Star Game presented by MasterCard and private dinners with some of baseball’s greatest players and legends through its Transcendent Collection experience.

Topps said it currently is working on a set which for the first time it would “turn the creative reigns over to players, celebrities and fans.”

According to Topps, players will work with the Topps team to choose all of the elements that go into developing a trading card set: design, templates, insert themes, card stock, logo placement, player/talent selection, images and copy.

An intro spot shows Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals working with Topps on the set. No release date was given.

“Collecting baseball cards is such a personal experience for so many and we look for ways to enhance those moments, whether it’s through opening a pack of cards with your friends or winning a contest to throw out a first pitch,” Leiner said. “MLB and Topps aim to be a part of baseball fans’ lives from their childhood and this partnership will allow that to continue for years to come.”

According to Noah Garden, MLB evp-commerce, “Baseball and trading cards go hand-in-hand, eliciting memories of the legends of our game and showcasing the stars of today and tomorrow.

“Topps vibrantly remains a part of the baseball lexicon that conjures images so many of us have cherished.”
