October 2, 2017: Back in 1952, Andy Pafko of the Brooklyn Dodgers was the first No. 1, leading off Topp’s initial set of MLB trading cards.

For 2018, Topps is asking people to vote from among a group of 14 players (plus the opportunity for a write-in) to decide which player would hold the prestigious No. 1 spot for the 2018 Topps Baseball Series 1.

According to Beckett, the bible for sports card collecting, "For the most part, it has been baseball’s best in the No. 1 spot on the Topps Baseball checklist."

Players who have been No. 1 in Topps baseball also include Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Nolan Ryan, Mike Piazza, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson and Derek Jeter.

This is the third consecutive year that Topps is asking people to vote for the No. 1 card.

The 2018 winner will follow in the footsteps of Mike Trout (2016) and Kris Bryant (2017), both voted No. 1 by fans and consumers.

Among the 14 vying for the '18 leadoff spot: 52-homer/114 RBI rookie Aaron Judge (New York Yankees), 59-homer star Giancarlo Stanton (Miami Marlins) and Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale (17-8, 2.90 ERA, 308 Ks).

Trout and Bryant also are on the list. (See full list below.)

To enhance the voting process, Topps is offering prizes, randomly choosing entries from those who voted. Winners will then be selected randomly and contacted via e-mail.

Among the prizes: 2017 Topps Triple Threads Baseball hobby box, 2017 Bowman Chrome hobby box, 2017 Topps Allen & Ginter hobby box, 2017 Topps Clearly Authentic hobby box and  2017 Topps Tribute David Ortiz relic /199). (Details and full list of prizes here.)

People can vote at the Topps Web site.

They are also being asked to promote the contest on social media using the hashtag #ToppsCardNo1.

Voting will take place now through Friday, Oct. 6 (4 PM ET).

The winner will be unveiled "a couple of weeks" before the release of 2018 Topps Baseball Series 1, which is scheduled for Jan. 31, 2018.
