Topps Puts Mike Trout In Place Of Honor For Milestone Living Set Card No. 200

By Barry Janoff

June 19, 2019: Topps’ special Living Set, which launched in March 2018 with Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees as Card No. 1, has reach another milestone: Card No. 200, which features arguably the best MLB player over the past few years, Mike Trout.

The two-time NL MVP Los Angeles Angels outfielder follows in a place of honor Babe Ruth, who was featured on Card No. 100 late last year.

As with all Living Set cards, the Trout card will be available for one week (now through June 26, approximately 2 PM ET) and then be out-of-print.

Trout’s card is also available in a three-card bundle, including No. 199 Christin Stewart and No. 201 Martin Prado.

It also comes with a bonus: Two Living Set checklist cards: No. 1-100 and No. 101-200, respectively.

This is week 67 of the on-going set, modeled after the historic 1953 Topps baseball design, the first hand-painted set.

The Topps Living Set is being created with artwork by renowned sports artist Mayumi Seto.

Trout will seek to reach a sales plateau attained by only 16 other Topps Living Cards to date — selling more than 10,000 units.

Topps prints only as many cards as it receives orders for each player.

Ruth Topps Living Card Set No. 100 sold 14,976 pieces, Judge’s No. 1 13,256.

The top-selling card to date: No. 19 Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves, with a print run of 46,809.

The Top Five to date also include Card  No. 43 Juan Soto (28,572), No. 34 Gleyber Torres (28,550), No. 179 Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (27,749) and No. 7 Shohei Ohtani (20,966)

Topps has been interspersing MLB legends along with current players, including No. 14 Derek Jeter, No. 46 Hank Aaron, No. 55 Ted Williams, No. 76 Roberto Clemente and No. 193 Ken Griffey, Jr.

Topps honored Jackie Robinson by putting him on card No. 42.

According to Topps, Living Set breaks with tradition in that the collection began with No. 1 and will run sequentially but will not have a final card number, enabling the collection to live “year after year.”

Three cards will be produced at a time but will be available for one week only and never reprinted. Players themselves will not be repeated unless they sign with a new team.

The only player to date with three Topps Living Cards is Manny Machado, who is pictured as a member of the Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, respectively.
