Alliance Of American Football Adds Turner Sports To Inaugural Season Partners

By Barry Janoff

January 31, 2019: The Alliance of American Football, scheduled to begin its inaugural season the weekend of Feb. 9-10, has signed a deal to have games air across Turner Sports platforms.

The plan calls for Turner to broadcast one regular season and one playoff game per season, with weekly games throughout the season on B/R Live.

CBS Sports Network is the lead broadcast partner for AAF, which was co-founded by Charlie Ebersol, a veteran TV and film producer; and Bill Polian, a veteran football executive with more than 40 years of experience.

Financial terms of the pact were not released.

Turner’s TNT will televise the Salt Lake Stallions vs. Birmingham Iron on Feb. 16 as a lead-in to its cover of the 2019 NBA All-Star Game All-Star Saturday Night presented by State Farm.

TNT will then air an Alliance playoff game in April.

B/R Live will support the inaugural season of AAF with a special program available Feb. 9, "introducing fans to the league, including some of the top moments from the pre-season."

B/R Live’s game coverage will begin Saturday, Feb. 23, with the Arizona Hotshots vs. Salt Lake.

AAF partners also include Riddell, Starter, New Era and Topps.

AAF said it has signed more than 400 players. Head coaches include such former NFL players and/or head coaches as Mike Singletary, Steve Spurrier, Brad Childress, Dennis Erickson and Mike Martz.

“We’re looking forward to this exciting partnership with The Alliance — including working closely with its leadership team of Charlie Ebersol, Bill Polian, Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu — and share the enthusiasm and forward-thinking vision being applied to this newly-formed league,” Lenny Daniels, president of Turner Sports, said via the network.

“This is a true partnership and The Alliance will have our full support in the distribution of its live game coverage and content across the Turner Sports portfolio.”

In addition to live game coverage, all AAF games distributed through B/R Live will be available on demand, with highlight rights extending across B/R platforms.

According to Ebersol, “Our focus has always been, and will always be, to create an Alliance of players, fans and the game.

“Joining forces with world-class partners like Turner Sports allows us to keep our mission moving forward and reach thousands of sports fans across their Turner family of platforms.”

Ebersol said that “Turner’s focus on providing high-quality live event programming and their commitment to digital with B/R Live, fits seamlessly into our distribution model, and ultimately offers fans the opportunity to watch more football.”

The inaugural Alliance championship game is scheduled for April 27, 2019, to be broadcast nationally on CBS from Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium.
