Twitter Building NFL Presence With News, Live Shows, Highlights, Game Day Analysis

May 11, 2017: Twitter, in the process of ramping up its live and support sports platforms, has signed what was called "a new multi-year deal to deliver uniquely packaged official NFL video and other types of content to fans around the world daily, year-round."

Twitter, which has been working with the NFL since  2013 through the Amplify program, last year was the league’s exclusive partner in delivering a live OTT digital stream of ten Thursday Night Football games broadcast by NBC and CBS.

This year, the NFL signed Amazon Prime as its exclusive partner in that capacity.

Instead, Twitter will embark on several NFL platforms as part of the social media-based company’s over-arching sports strategy, which also includes the WNBA, MLBAM, Stadium, the PGA Tour and The Players’ Tribune; and an entertainment platform that includes Live Nation and IMG Fashion.

Among the efforts this coming season will be an NFL-produced 30-minute live digital show to air on Twitter five days per week; utilizing Periscope and Twitter there will be live pre-game access from each of the NFL’s primetime game windows, as well as other key match-ups during the season; and  highlights, breaking news and analysis on Twitter throughout the season.

"We are very excited to offer football fans around the world even more content on Twitter from the NFL," Twitter COO Anthony Noto said in a statement.

"This new multi-year collaboration will bring compelling live studio programs that discuss what's happening in the NFL, unique behind the scenes live broadcasts before games, and the best NFL highlights to Twitter, alongside the real-time NFL conversation."

According to both sides, the live digital show would be hosted by top NFL Network talent and include breaking news, game highlights, key storylines, fantasy projections, team power rankings and pre-game updates.

Starting this weekend, to coincide with the start of the 2017 campaign,Twitter for the first time will live-stream a weekly regular-season WNBA game, and will have a total of 20 games per season during 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Working with MLBAM, in addition to weekly live MLB games that stream on Twitter this season, a new three-hour weekly MLB program is live-streaming exclusively on Twitter. The “whip-around show” features live MLB game look-ins and highlights.

Regarding the NFL, according to Brian Rolapp, chief media and business officer for the league, "Twitter continues to be an important partner in accessing millions of highly engaged fans on digital media.

"We have every expectation that the new daily live show, produced by NFL Network and featuring some of our top analysts, will quickly become some of the most popular programming on Twitter."
