Under Armour, Misty Copeland Unveil ‘Fun, Flirty, Fierce’ Signature Collection

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

May 3, 2018:
Days after sharing a financial forecast for 2018 that was stronger — albeit still challenging — than a report just months earlier, Under Armour is putting one of its lead spokespersons front-and-center to drive sales and raise brand awareness.

Under Armour and Misty Copeland are launching a Signature Collection, which was co-designed with the principal ballerina for the American Ballet Theatre.

According to Under Armour, the Misty Copeland Signature Collection “embodies a stylistic story of poise and power, and is rooted in performance, which is synonymous with the Under Armour brand.”

“If I could sum this collection up in three words (they) would be fun, flirty and fierce," Copeland, who has been with Under Armour for four years, said in a statement. “I really truly wanted it to represent me not only as a dancer, but as a woman.”

The collection includes such unique items as the Misty Copeland Signature trench coat, a leather bomber jacket and a dress with a detachable bodysuit. There also are the more traditional pieces such as leggings and workout gear. (Prices range from $60 -$550).

Although marketing support was not detailed, it is expected to include Internet, social media and POP.

Copland, who has appeared in several generic marketing campaigns for Under Armour, said the Signature Collection, is a reflection of her personal life.

"I wanted a line where (women) could feel fierce in the gym and at the same time feel confident wearing the same look out to dinner, running errands or living our everyday lives," said Copeland.

“I wanted to showcase the versatility of my own personal style, and together with Under Armour, we are bringing a beautiful collection to life. Under Armour helped my vision become a reality.”

According to Morgan Goerke, GM for Women's at Under Armour, "Under Armour celebrates the power of women, and Misty is the epitome of a powerful woman with the poise, command and grace she carries with her on and off the stage.

“Misty's passion for lifting women up perfectly aligns with Under Armour's platform and the result is this beautiful, collaborative collection."

During a Q1 2018 call on May 1, Under Armour CEO and founder Kevin Plank said that revenue was up 6% to $1.2 billion, direct-to-consumer revenue up 17% to $352 million and apparel revenue up 7% to $766 million.

Although some figures were not as positive — revenue to wholesale customers increased just 1% (to $779 million) and North America revenue was down 1%; and Under Armour recently was passed by Puma for third in sales among athletic-brand companies, behind Nike and adidas, according to financial analysts — Plank had reasons to see a more solid future than months earlier.

“As a company, there is no question that 2017 and 2018 make up one of the most challenging, yet opportunistic periods in our history,” Plank said during the financial call.

“In the midst of this inflection point, we are holistically transforming the company to ensure that the consumer is always first, simplifying our operations, increasing speed across our global ecosystem and prioritizing investments based on return.”

"I wanted a line where (women) could feel fierce in the gym and at the same time feel confident wearing the same look out to dinner or running errands."

Plank supported that statement during the financial call, pointing to the recently released UA HOVR Phantom and Sonic running footwear, and the new UA Project Rock collection (fronted by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) as having “already virtually sold through.”

Examples our how Under Armour’s “go-to-market has changed during this hybrid period” also include its ColdGear reaction and unstoppable collections; as well as the Signature Curry 4 and Curry 5 with NBA star Stephen Curry; and Speed 2 footwear relations, according to Plank.

Baltimore-based Under Armour’s spokespersons also include Tom Brady, Jordan Spieth, Bryce Harper, Buster Posey, Michael Phelps, Andy Murray, Julio Jones, Cam Newton, Clayton Kershaw, Lindsey Vonn and Kelley O’Hara.

The Misty Copeland Signature Collection will be available for purchase at UA.com/Misty-Copeland-Collection, in Under Armour Brand Houses and in select Macy's locations.
