Under Armour CEO Plank: 'Incredibly Disappointed With Our 2017 Performance'

By Barry Janoff

October 31, 2017: You know you are not about to hear an upbeat assessment of a company when the founder and CEO opens a conference call by saying, “Before we start, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the disappointment that we feel about our financial performance in 2017. We understand the issues that put us in this position.”

Those were the words of Kevin Plank, CEO and founder for Under Armour, on an analyst-media conference call Tuesday morning to talk about the company’s Q3 finances.

Among the figures, revenue was down 5% to $1.4 billion, apparel revenue decreased 8% to $939 million and North America “challenges impacted results” with revenue down 12%.

"While our international business continues to deliver against our ambition of building a global brand, operational challenges and lower demand in North America resulted in third quarter revenue that was below our expectations," said Plank.

"As we look to close out 2017, we do no expect these conditions to improve. Based on these issues in our largest market, we believe it is prudent to reduce our sales and earnings outlook for the remainder of 2017."

Among the positive situations for the Baltimore-based sports apparel and footwear company: “Strong international momentum continued with revenue up 35%, revenue was up 52% in Asia-Pacific and up 33% in Latin America.”

The company also has what it called “an amazing roster of athletes,” including Stephen Curry, Tom Brady, Jordan Spieth, Misty Copeland, Michael Phelps, Lindsey Vonn, Cam Newton, Sloane Stephens, Clayton Kershaw and Bryce Harper.

Still, the report was far from optimistic.

“We are incredibly disappointed with our 2017 performance,” said Plank during the call with analysts and media. “We have not performed to the level we had originally aspired to.”

According to Under Armour, growth in golf and sport-style was “more than offset by declines in outdoor, women's training and youth.”

Footwear revenue was up 2% to $285 million, “driven by strength in running and outdoor, offset by basketball and youth.”

Accessories revenue increased 1% to $123 million “led by golf and men's training, tempered by a decline in outdoor.”

“In the past few years, while we delivered industry-leading innovation, built an amazing roster of athletes and assets, accelerated our footwear business, expanded DTC in our wholesale distribution, while gaining traction in our International business, our operations have become increasingly more complex,” said Plank.

"Strategically, while we try to manage the brand as best as possible in this environment, the pace of sector-wide inventory work-through has sustained as a much slower pace than we anticipated. This continues to contribute to lower demand and consequently contracting wholesale revenue for our business."

"Based on these issues in our largest market, we believe it is prudent to reduce our sales and earnings outlook for the remainder of 2017."

According to Plank, "Amid this backdrop, 2017 has been a reset for Under Armor and while certainly a challenging year, it is a time that has taught us invaluable lessons, strengthened our results and will prove to be a year that helps redefine us as a brand company and culture.

"Against this difficult backdrop, our management team is working aggressively to evolve our strategy and level of execution to proactively address these challenges. We understand that success in our next chapter requires managing with focused financial discipline and driving excellence into every area of our business while we amplify innovation, deliver fresh product and connect even more deeply with our consumers."
