September 29, 2009: Unilever has signed a multi-year deal with Soccer United Marketing making Degree Men the official antiperspirant/deodorant of Major League Soccer as well as the Mexican National Team. Financial terms were not disclosed.
SUM holds exclusive rights to and is the marketing division for MLS and numerous other soccer entities and has the English and Spanish TV rights in the U.S. to the World Cup. Other MLS partners include adidas, Pepsi, Budweiser, Visa and Volkswagen.
The Degree Men-MLS alliance will be supported by an "Always Take on the Challenge" campaign to include Internet and experiential marketing for the remainder of the 2009 season and then expand for 2010. The alliance with the Mexican National Team includes star Andres Guardado as product spokesman in marketing efforts.
Degree Men will have significant presence during the Mexican National Team's tour of the U.S., which begins Sept. 30 in a game against Colombia at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
"We are thrilled to be part of this first-ever sponsorship opportunity with Soccer United Marketing," Jay Mathew, marketing director for Degree Men, said in a statement." This is a step forward in our efforts to connect more closely with the Hispanic community and provide men the protection they need whether they are enjoying a friendly neighborhood game or simply watching their favorite soccer team from the stands, without having to worry about sweat and odor."
