From Griffey Jr. To Diamonds: Upper Deck Plans 30th Anniversary Celebration

By Barry Janoff

February 26, 2019: In February 1989, Upper Deck delivered its first set of trading cards to a shop in Tulsa.

Thirty years later, card No. 1 in the MLB set, Ken Griffey Jr., is still regarded as one of the most iconic cards in sports trading history.

Upper Deck plans to celebrate its 30th anniversary with special product releases, marketing and fan and athlete activation, some tied to its roster of exclusive endorsers.

Serena Williams was added to that roster last year, which also includes Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tiger Woods and Wayne Gretzky.

"While many things have changed since we opened our doors in 1989, our vision has remained the same; to deliver the most innovative, high quality and authentic products in the collectibles industry,’” Upper Deck president Jason Masherah said via the Carlsbad, Calif.-based company.

"We remain dedicated to creating and delivering the most premium products for our fans and collectors around the world."

The 1989 baseball set’s Star Rookies 26-card subset also includes Randy Johnson, Sandy Alomar, John Smoltz and Gary Sheffield.

Among the special releases planned for the 30th anniversary campaign is the upcoming Diamond Relic Overlay promotion, featuring 30 cards containing 1-to-3 lab-generated diamonds; and a Diamond 1-of-1 Variation Draft promotion featuring 1-of-1 cards numbered to 30.

According to Upper Deck, “Overlay cards will be strategically placed in sports and entertainment trading card boxes throughout the year, starting with a Connor McDavid Diamond Relic card in Upper Deck's Trilogy hockey product.”

The Diamond Variation promotion will be distributed via a live draft during the Sportscard & Memorabilia Expo in Toronto later this year.

Collectors can earn a spot in the draft by finding "official winner" redemption cards randomly inserted inside of Upper Deck card packs, per Upper Deck.

Upper Deck is already having a memorable year.

In January, the NHL and NHL Players’ Assn. signed a deal to continue with Upper Deck as the exclusive licensed manufacturer of NHL Trading Cards.

The 2018-19 NHL season marks the 29th straight year of Upper Deck hockey, a partnership that dates back to the 1990-91 season.

Upper Deck became the first exclusive trading card partner of the NHL and NHLPA from 2004 through 2009-10 and has held similar rights since the 2014-15 season.

Also in January, Upper Deck launched Pack Wars on the company’s patent pending e-Pack platform, which allows collectors to instantly buy, open, collect and trade cards with other collectors across the world.

The company is also credited with creating the first autographed insert cards, game-used jersey cards, game used bat cards and multi-panel sketch cards.

Away from sports, in November, Upper Deck signed a deal to produce trading cards and trading card games for the James Bond franchise.

Under the agreement with EON Productions, Upper Deck said it would “develop products pulling from a rich collection of films that form the backbone of this uniquely British franchise.”

Upper Deck also has entertainment licenses that include Marvel, Sanrio Inc., and HIT Entertainment.
