QB Is Toast: Urban Meyer Named Head Breakfast Coach For Bob Evans Restaurant

By Barry Janoff

UPDATE August 2, 2018: Amid reports that Urban Meyer, head football coach at Ohio State University, was aware of allegations of domestic abuse involving now former assistant coach Zach Smith, and subsequently saying he had no knowledge of the situation, Bob Evans Restaurants has ended its alliance with the coach and their marketing campaign, “Head Breakfast Coach.”

“We are suspending the current partnership with Urban Meyer and removing all related content pending the results of the official Ohio State University investigation,” the restaurant chain said in a statement.

“At Bob Evans Restaurants, we believe strongly in the family first values upon which the company was founded."

Meyer has been placed on administrative leave of absence by the University pending investigation. Offensive coordinator Ryan Day will be the team's acting head coach.

July 30, 2018: Urban Meyer stands at a podium, answering questions from the press as he has done many times before.

But the questions are not about quarterbacks, defensive strategy and defending the national title but about eggs, bacon, toast and pancakes in Bob Evans Restaurants.

“I’m Urban Meyer and I approve this breakfast,” says the head coach of the defending college football National Championship Ohio State Buckeyes.

“This organization has a ton of heart and I can promise you that no one will go home hungry.”

On Nov. 28, 2011, former University of Florida head coach and ESPN college football analyst Meyer accepted the position of Buckeyes head coach.

On July 30, 2018, he has signed as the first Head Breakfast Coach for Bob Evans Restaurants.

According to Bob Evans Restaurants, “Our down-to-earth food made from scratch is always the perfect morning play and when the game is on the line, there is only one way Head Breakfast Coach Urban Meyer starts his day.

“Coach believes to be "Nine Strong" you need to be "One Strong" first. The Everything Breakfast adheres to his winning strategy by using nine strong ingredients to create one hearty meal: Three scrambled eggs, Bob Evans fresh sausage, hickory smoked ham, hardwood smoked bacon, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, hollandaise and scallions on a bed of hash browns. Served with our new griddled biscuit.

Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Bob Evans Restaurants owns and operates 495 family restaurants in 18 states, primarily in the Midwest, mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions of the U.S.

The multi-alliance includes TV, radio, digital, social media and in-restaurant advertising.

Bob Evans said that it would be unveiling "Bowl Season" later this year with its first “Biscuit Bowl,” including a social media activation and consumer sweepstakes.

That would support the restaurant’s new biscuit bowls--large golden brown and flaky biscuits filled with a variety of tasty toppings.

Meyer, whose  team went 14-1 last season (8-0 in the Big Ten) en route to the CFP National Championship, said he is a loyal customer of the restaurant.

“Just like OSU football fans on game days, Bob Evans guests can expect nothing but our top performance for every breakfast and dining experience. I won't accept anything less," said Meyer.

According to Saed Mohseni, president and CEO for Bob Evans Restaurants, “We couldn't think of a better fit for our first Head Breakfast Coach than Urban Meyer.

“We expect coach Meyer to bring out the best in us as he comes to the table with a winning attitude, impressive football resume and of course a mutual appreciation for farm fresh quality and hearty breakfast foods.

“We're ready for whatever plays he throws at us,” said Mohsen.
