Winning U.S.-Led 2026 World Cup Could Add $5B To Economy, $14.3B Revenue

By Barry Janoff

June 13, 2018: “The member associations of Canada, Mexico and USA have been selected by the FIFA Congress to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Thank you.”

With those words, FIFA president Gianni Infantino added prestige, intensity and marketing activation to the U.S. landscape, which in eight years will host the majority of games for the 2026 World Cup and then two years later the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The United Bid received 134 of 200 votes cast (67%) and Morocco, the only other contender, 65 votes (33%). One member association, Iran, voted not to choose either of the two bids.

“Hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup is a rare and important moment to demonstrate that we are all truly united through sport,” Carlos Cordeiro, president of U.S. Soccer and co-chair of the United Bid, said in a statement.

‘We are humbled by the trust our colleagues in the FIFA family have put in our bid, strengthened by the unity between our three countries and the CONCACAF region and excited by the opportunity we have to put football on a new and sustainable path for generations to come.”

Hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup could generate more than $5 billion in short-term economic activity, including supporting approximately 40,000 jobs and more than $1 billion in incremental worker earnings across North America, according to a study done by The Boston Consulting Group for U.S. Soccer.

In 2011, Fox and the Spanish-language network Telemundo paid a then-record $1 billion for the exclusive rights to broadcast the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, according to industry analysts, which previously had been held by ESPN/ABC and Univision.

Those rights were extended through the 2026 games in 2015 for an estimated $945 million combined.

“Fox Sports congratulates the United Bid Committee of the United States, Mexico and Canada on being awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” Fox Sports said in a statement.

“The 1994 World Cup in the U.S.(the only time the U.S. has hosted the World Cup) helped catalyze the sport’s current domestic popularity, and Fox Sports has continued to proudly cover and support the game. As the official English-language broadcaster of the next three FIFA World Cups, we expect the 2026 tournament to represent another massive leap forward in North America.”

Fox Sports said it was “excited to welcome our partners at FIFA and others around the world to our backyard for this unrivaled sporting event.”

FIFA global sponsors with deals that currently run through 2026 include adidas, Coca-Cola and Wanda Group.

Sixty of the 80 games in the tournament will be played in the U.S. including every match from the quarterfinals through the finals. Canada and Mexico will host ten games each.

Among the United bid locations are Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Edmonton, Guadalajara, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Miami, Montreal, New York-New Jersey, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Orlando, Philadelphia, Toronto and Washington DC.

FIFA earlier this month reviewed bid reports from Morocco and a United bid from the U.S.-Canada-Mexico and came away with a 224-page report that states, “The Morocco 2026 bid and United 2026 bid represent almost two opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to the nature of their bids.”

Perhaps the most impactful conclusion of the FIFA Bid Evaluation Task Force: The Untied Bid would create a forecasted $14.3 billion in revenue for FIFA, the Morocco bid forecasted $7.2 billion for what would be the first 48-nation event in FIFA World Cup history.

Also of major importance to FIFA’s Task Force was the proposed stadiums in which games would be played.

United 2026 said that of the 23 potential stadiums that might be used for matches, 17 currently exist and need no major renovation for the World Cup, and the remaining six are built but are due for renovation.

Morocco proposed 14 stadiums, nine of which have not yet been built and the other five of which exist but need renovation.

“We’re blessed with 23 really world-class facilities, stadiums. Some iconic, some brand new, cutting-edge and everything in between,” Cordeiro said during a media conference call after the FIFA decision was revealed.

“I think it will be a very difficult decision that we will all have to make . . .  to determine the final 16, but it’s a high-class problem. It speaks to the quality of the facilities we have. And this is not a decision I’m looking forward to, because it’s going to be very, very hard. But we’re very excited.”

Morocco listed $1.87 billion in forecast organizing costs versus the United bid of $2.16 billion.

“Hosting a FIFA World Cup is an extraordinary honor and privilege,” Steven Reed, president of Canada Soccer and co-chair for the United Bid, said in a statement.

“Canada, Mexico, and the United States are ready to welcome the world to North America and serve as stewards of the largest FIFA World Cup in history. Our vision is of a world of opportunity for our Candidate Host Cities and for the global football community.”

A recent survey of adults in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. found that 77% of North American residents are in favor of hosting the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup, and 81% of respondents across the three countries agree that hosting the tournament would be good for their specific country, according to USSF.

The 2018 World Cup in Russia runs June 14-July 15.

The World Cup in Qatar is scheduled for Nov. 21-Dec. 18 2022.
