• Sacramento, California's capital city, has been awarded an MLS expansion team with Sacramento Republic FC becoming the league's 29th team and beginning play in MLS in 2022. The club will build a new, $300 million, 20,100-seat soccer stadium in the downtown Railyards District. 

• Octagon and the National Women’s Soccer League have signed a multi-tier consulting partnership, in which Octagon’s Global Media Rights Consulting and Marketing divisions will "advise the NWSL on its league media rights, sponsorship, and marketing." “The growth of the NWSL over the past six years has been tremendous, and the league, its teams and players show absolutely no sign of slowing down,” Christine Franklin, SVP, Marketing, Octagon, said via the firm.

• The Professional Baseball Agreement between MLB and minor league teams expires at the end of the 2020 season. But if a new MLB proposal were to become reality, more than three dozen cities with affiliated minor league teams will lose those teams a year from now and thousands of minor league players will be out of work as well. • Halloween this year is Oct. 31, and retailers, marketers and consumers are ready for another season of trick-or-treat. Total spend on Halloween 2019 is expected to reach $8.8 billion according to the National Retail Federation, Washington, DC. Full story here.

U.S. Open Ready To Host Party For Eligible Singles: Serena, Novak, Roger, Rafa

July 18, 2018: With the Wimbledon tournament now history, tennis mavens now have their eyes set on the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Open in New York.

According to the Open, 100 of the Top 101-ranked WTA women’s players in the world have earned direct entry into the 128-player main draw as did all 101 of the top-ranked ATP men’s players.

The women’s side is led by world No. 1 Simona Halep, world No. 3 and defending U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens and and six-time U.S. Open winner Serena Williams (and current world No. 28), who again will seek her 24th career Grand Slam after finishing as runner-up to current world No. 4 Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal is one of six former champions in the men’s singles field at the 2018 US Open.

Officially announced on Wednesday, the 2018 direct entry list also includes five-time champion Roger Federer, two-time winner (and Wimbledon 2018 champion) Novak Djokovic, 2009 winner Juan Martin del Potro, 2012 champ Andy Murray and 2014 winner Marin Cilic.

The women’s side also features two-time U.S. Open winner Venus Williams; 2006 champ Maria Sharapova; 2011 winner Sam Stosur; 2016 champion and now three-time Grand Slam champ Kerber.

In addition, top-ranked WTA players include Australian Open champion and world No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki; two-time Grand Slam women’s singles champion and world No. 7 Garbiñe Muguruza; two-time Wimbledon champion and world No. 8 Petra Kvitova; two-time Australian Open titlist Victoria Azarenka; and 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko complete the list of Grand Slam singles champions earning direct entry.

Rounding out the Top 10 entries are world No. 5 Elina Svitolina, world No. 6 Caroline Garcia, world No. 9 Karolina Pliskova and world No. 10 Julia Goerges.

The July 16 release of the WTA and ATP rankings were used to determine the U.S. Open main-draw entry list. Seeds will be determined and unveiled closer to the start of the event.

The 2018 US Open will be played Monday, Aug. 27, through Sunday, Sept. 9, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

The US Open Women’s Singles Championship is presented by J.P. Morgan.
