Dreams Of Gold: Team USA Skates To Winter Games Without NHL Players

By Barry Janoff

January 2, 2018: This past April, the NHL, stating that “the overwhelming majority of our clubs are adamantly opposed to disrupting the 2017-18 NHL season for purposes of accommodating Olympic participation by some NHL players,” officially decided not to allow players under contract to play for their respective national teams in the 2018 Winter Games.

USA Hockey has moved on, naming its roster from among a pool of some 100 players currently not on NHL contracts, from among U.S. players “based in Europe, playing in the American Hockey League or other minor leagues, or playing college hockey,” according to USA Hockey.

The move has also significantly impacted the Canadian men’s hockey team, which has won the past two gold medals.

The last time the NHL did not have players in the Olympics was 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway.

Among the players named to the Team USA men’s team are James Wisniewski and Jim Slater, who have each played more then 500 NHL games.

Three players currently participate in the AHL: Chris Bourque (Hershey Bears), Bobby Butler (Milwaukee Admirals) and John McCarthy (San Jose Barracuda).

Five of those named to the Team USA roster come from teams in Switzerland’s National League: Bobby Sanguinetti, Mark Arcobello, Broc Little, Garrett Roe and Slater.

Five players from the Kontinental Hockey League made Team USA as did two who currently play in the Swedish Hockey League.

Tony Granato, the men’s head coach at the University of Wisconsin, is Team USA’s Olympic head coach.

“We really like our roster,” according to Jim Johannson, GM for the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team and also USA Hockey assistant executive director for hockey operations. “It’s a group that brings versatility and experience and includes players who have a lot of passion about representing our country.”

On the women’s side, Team USA will be led by Hilary Knight (pictured), Meghan Duggan, Kacey Bellamy and twins Monique Lamoureux-Morando and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson.

PyeongChang marks the third consecutive Winter Games for all five players.

Team USA won the first women’s ice hockey Olympic gold medal in 1998, followed by silver in 2002, 2012 and 2014, and bronze in 2006.

Canada has won gold at each of last four Winter Games.

“Today we took another step closer towards achieving our ultimate goal, which is to bring home a gold medal from South Korea,” said Reagan Carey, GM for the 2018 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team and also the director of women’s hockey for USA Hockey, said in a statement.

“We’ve had an exceptional four months in Wesley Chapel leading up to this point and are confident that these 23 women give our country the best opportunity to reach the top of the podium in February.”

More than half of the players named to the 2018 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team are returning gold medalists, including four two-time returning gold medalists — Adam Page, Nikko Landeros, Josh Pauls — and three-time Paralympic gold medal goalie Steve Cash.

Six other players were part of the gold-medal winning team in Sochi.

The Winter Games are scheduled for Feb. 8-25, NBC Sports.

The Paralympic Games are scheduled for March 8-18, NBC Sports.
