Red Bull Named USA Basketball Partner, Will Lead 3x3 Push To Olympic Games

By Barry Janoff

May 2, 2019: In anticipation of the 2020 Olympics, which among other competitions will introduce 3x3 Basketball to the Summer Games, USA Basketball has signed a multi-year deal with Red Bull North America to “build an elite pathway for men’s and women’s players who have a goal of competing at the highest levels of 3x3 basketball.”

The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo — scheduled for July 24-Aug. 9 — will include eight men’s and eight women’s 3x3 basketball national teams competing for the first time in the new Olympic discipline.

Anchoring the partnership, Red Bull — which has been named the official energy drink for USA Basketball — will host more than 20 qualifying tournaments nationwide under the newly-created Red Bull 3X series to ”identify the eight athletes who could potentially represent USA Basketball at the 2020 Olympics.”

Financial terms of the partnership were not shared.

According to USA Basketball, the winning teams at these qualifiers will compete to accumulate enough individual FIBA (International Basketball Federation) points with the goal of advancing to the Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Regionals, scheduled for Fall 2019,

They then would progress to the Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals in March 2020, which will be used to select the USA men’s and women’s 3x3 national teams.

Players may also be selected from the rosters of the teams competing to reach the 2019 USA Basketball Men’s and Women's 3x3 National Championships, which will be held May 3-4 in Las Vegas.

The inaugural Red Bull 3X qualifier is scheduled for Detroit on June 22. Other tournament sites include Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York (Brooklyn), Philadelphia and Seattle. (Details here; full schedule below.)

“USA Basketball has a rich tradition of success on the court, and Red Bull has a legacy in progressing sports and engaging fans, so this partnership is a perfect pairing,” Jim Tooley, CEO for USA Basketball, said via the organization.

“Both organizations are synonymous with athletes, groundbreaking events, creative projects and content, and USA Basketball is thrilled to collaborate in this unprecedented partnership to take 3x3 basketball to new heights.”

Support will include multi-media marketing, with a promo spot, "USA Hoops Stars Talk 3x3," unveiled along with the partnership. It features such hoops stars as Bruce Bowen, Asia Durr, Kara Lawson and Chris Mullin taking about 3x3 basketball, Red Bull and the Olympics.

NBA stars Anthony Davis and Blake Griffin and WNBA All-Star Breanna Stewart are all Red Bull athletes, but it was not indicated if they would appear in 3x3 marketing.

Red Bull Media House will create original stories with USA Basketball to focus on the 3x3 game, qualifiers and players and “celebrate the journey as the sport makes its debut at the Olympics.”

According to Sean Eggert, head of Red Bull Sports-North America, “Our partnership with USA Basketball furthers our ongoing commitment to basketball and will give wings to the next generation of world-class players.

“With 3x3 joining the Olympic movement for the first time in 2020, we are excited to be at the forefront of establishing a pathway to the highest levels of the game, build on our NBA team and athlete partnerships, and energize the sport across the country.”

In the promo spot, Mullin — who has stared in hoops at the collegiate and pro level and won two Olympic gold medals with Team USA (1984, 1992) —  offers, “This is going to carve out a whole new generation of basketball players. In the NBA we play 3x3: If guys are not getting playing time you play 3x3. I used it all the time to develop skills.

“With 3x3 coming to the Olympics, I want to help grow the sport.”
