USOC Adds More Gold To Paralympic Effort, Raising Reward For Medal Performances

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

September 23, 2018:
Stating that “Paralympians are an integral part of our athlete community,” the U.S. Olympic Committee said it would increase Operation Gold Awards for Paralympic athletes by as much as 400%.

Operation Gold provides monetary rewards to athletes who earn medals at Paralympic and Olympic Games.

According to the USOC, “Paralympians and Olympians will now earn equal payouts for medal performances.”

Payments will be retroactively distributed to include medals won at the Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang this past March.

The retroactive payments would 2018 U.S. Paralympic medalists more than $1.2 million, according to the USOC. The U.S. Paralympic Team won 36 medals, the most among all nations at the Paralympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.

Paralympic athletes will now receive $37,500 for each gold medal earned at the Paralympic Games, $22,500 for silver and $15,000 for bronze.

“Paralympians are an integral part of our athlete community and we need to ensure we’re appropriately rewarding their accomplishments,” Sarah Hirshland, who was named USOC CEO in July, said via the organization.

“Our financial investment in U.S. Paralympics and the athletes we serve is at an all-time high, but this was one area where a discrepancy existed in our funding model that we felt needed to change.”

The next Paralympics are part of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games.

The Tokyo 2020 Games are July 24 - Aug. 9.

The Paralympic Games are Aug. 25 - Sept. 6.

Both will be seen in the U.S. exclusively on the NBC Sports platform.

The first official Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1960, with 400 athletes from 23 countries.

The 1988 Summer Paralympics were the first to be hosted in the same venues using the same venues a few weeks after the Olympics Games of that year.

The first Winter Paralympic Games were held in 1976 in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, then known as the 1st Winter Olympic Games for the Disabled.

According to Cheri Blauwet, USOC board member, “The board has been discussing this change for several months. Following consultation with Paralympic athletes, the Paralympic Advisory Council and an endorsement from the Athletes Advisory Council, I’m really glad we were able to take this important step.”

Global International Paralympic Committee partners include Atos, BP, Ottobock, Panasonic, Samsung, Toyota and Visa.

Alliance just signed to become a top tier partner with the International Olympic Committee beginning in 2021, which also includes an official alliance with the International Paralympic Committee and the Paralympic Games.

“Paralympians are an integral part of our athlete community and we need to ensure we’re appropriately rewarding their accomplishments."

“As a world-leading insurer, Allianz is directly embedded in all the great events which make and transform our global society. That is why becoming the Worldwide TOP Partner in the insurance category of the IOC and the IIPC is important for us,” Jean-Marc Pailhol, head of group market management and distribution for Allianz SE, said via the company when the deal was unveiled earlier this month.

"Having had more than a decade of success with the IPC, as well as with National Paralympic Committees from around the world, we’re looking forward to continuing to work together to share our joint passion for sport and the social, physical and mental benefits it brings to humanity.”

IOC global partners include Alibaba Group, Atos, Bridgestone, Coca-Cola, Dow, GE, Intel, Omega, Panasonic, P&G, Samsung, Toyota and Visa

“I’m thrilled that we’ve brought parity and equality to our Operation Gold program and we're eager to continue to build on Team USA’s success in PyeongChang,” said Hirshland.
