Las Vegas Finds Respite From Tragedy In Pro Sports With NBA, NHL, NFL, MiLB

By Barry Janoff

October 11, 2017: In the midst of great tragedy, Las Vegas is finding some peace and promise with pro sports.

Long known for its glitz, glamour and gambling, Las Vegas is becoming a Mecca of pro sports with the NHL expansion franchise Vegas Golden Knights — which on their opening night Tuesday honored the 59 victims and 500 casualties of the mass shooting on Oct. 1 — and the anticipated arrival of the NFL’s Raiders from Oakland in 2019 or 2020.

Among current MLB stars who come from Las Vegas are Bryce Harper (Washington Nationals) and Kris Bryant (Chicago Cubs).

Las Vegas is also the training site for USA Basketball and the NBA Summer League.

The UFC was founded and is headquartered in Las Vegas.

Since 1983, Las Vegas has also been home to a MilB Class AAA team in the Pacific Coast League, when the franchise moved from Spokane, Wash., to become the Las Vegas Stars.

The Stars rebooted in 2001 to the Las Vegas 51s, named after the infamous Area 51about 80 miles north of Las Vegas, which also explains when the team uses an alien as part of its logo.

The team has called 9,300-seat Cashman Stadium home, but will be moving to a new stadium following the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority approving a marketing partnership that gives LVCVA naming rights to the stadium via a 20-year, $80 million naming-rights agreement.

Las Vegas Ballpark (artist's rendition above) is expected to open for the 2019 season.

The 51s, owned by the Howard Hughes Corp., said the $150 million venue is being built by global architecture firm global HOK.

“Together, we have worked tirelessly to bring this much needed initiative to fruition for the benefit and enjoyment of the entire Southern Nevada community,”  David Weinreb, CEO for The Howard Hughes Corp., said in a statement.

“The ballpark will further distinguish Downtown Summerlin as a vibrant destination and give valley residents a first-class amenity and the opportunity to enjoy professional baseball in an inviting and family-friendly environment,” said Weinreb.

It will be located next to City National Arena, the training facility for the Golden Knights in downtown Summerlin, as part of a 1.8-million-square-foot retail and office complex.

The 10,000-fan-capacity stadium will “blend the distinct architectural style of the Summerlin community with the aviation legacy of Howard Hughes.”

In addition to serving as the home of the Las Vegas 51s, Las Vegas Ballpark will host civic, community, non-profit and sporting events, according to the LVCVA.

"With a new home in downtown Summerlin, the future of professional baseball in Southern Nevada looks exceptionally bright.”

Since moving to Las Vegas, the team has been a MiLB affiliate of the San Diego Padres (1982-2000), Los Angeles Dodgers (2001-08), Toronto Blue Jays (2009-12) and New York Mets (2013-18).

The Mets will no longer be the parent club for the Las Vegas 51s after next season.

According to Don Logan, Las Vegas 51s president and COO, the team “will seek a new MLB affiliate”  and expect to have one in place by the 2019-2020 season.

“The 51s baseball team has been a staple in the Las Vegas community for over three decades,” Logan said in a statement. "With a new home in downtown Summerlin, the future of professional baseball in Southern Nevada looks exceptionally bright.”
