• China-based e-commerce giant Alibaba said it set a sales record on Singles Day, 11-11 — aka  the Double 11 shopping festival, “the world’s largest 24-hour shopping event" — with sales across Alibaba’s shopping platforms at $38.3 billion involving more than 200,000 brands. That exceeded last year’s record of nearly $30.5 billion. Alibaba also said that in its first hour, it generated an estimated $13 billion in sales. By comparison, in 2018, Black Friday sales were $6.2 billion, and Cyber Monday sales reached $7.9 billion, according to Forbes.

• Volcom has signed a deal to become the official apparel sponsor for the U.S. Snowboard Team. Volcom, a part of Authentic Brands Group, replaces Burton, which had been the apparel supplier for the group for the past four Winter Olympics. Financial terms of the deal, which runs through the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, were not shared.

• NBC’s Sunday Night Football on Nov. 10 became the decade’s (2010-19) only primetime series to average 20 million-plus viewers for 100 different broadcasts. American Ido is second with 69. The Minnesota Vikings’ 28-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 23.5 million viewers across NBC TV, NBC Sports Digital and NFL Digital platforms.

• CBS Sports said its coverage of the SEC on CBS with No. 2 ranked LSU beating No. 3 ranked Alabama, 46-41, on Nov. 9  “delivered a massive audience, had an average of 16.636 million viewers and scoring a fast national household rating/share of a 9.7/24 . . . the  highest-rated regular-season college football game (excluding Conference Championships) on any network in eight years.

• Calling it the company’s biggest brand launch in more than a decade, Coca-Cola North America has unveiled Aha sparkling water, eyeing a March 2020 drop at retail. “As the largest and fastest-growing part of the water business, mainstream flavored sparkling water is a segment we know we must double-down on,” Celina Li, vp-water, Coca-Cola North America, said via the company. “Aha is our big-bet brand in this big-bet category.” Full story here.

StubHub: Vegas Golden Knights, Capitals NHL’s Hottest 2018-19 Golden Tickets

Coming off a rookie NHL season in which the team reached the Stanley Cup Finals, the Knights have the most in-demand game and four of the Top Ten hottest tickets heading into the 2018-19 NHL season, according to online ticket broker StubHub.

Overall, Golden Knights tickets are the most in-demand among all NHL teams for the second consecutive season. The team’s home opener (Oct. 4) against the Philadelphia Flyers in T-Mobile Arena is No. 1 on StubHub’s list, with a $270 average ticket price.

The Golden Knights are also in demand on the road, with ticket sales 38% higher versus the average demand for NHL tickets on Stubhub.

“Last year was an unforgettable season for hockey fans and this year’s numbers tell us support isn’t slowing down for the Golden Knights after their historic run,” Scott Jablonski, StubHub’s GM of NHL, NFL & NBA, said in a statement.

“Not only are the Golden Knights the most in-demand team for the second year in a row, their home opener is also the top-selling matchup heading into this season.”

Showing that it pays to be in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals — not only to win a NHL championship but to drive interest and awareness in your team on a national and international level — the Washington Capitals are coming off their seven-game Stanley Cup win against Vegas as the second hottest team on StubHub.

The Capitals’ home opener (Oct. 3) against the Boston Bruins is the second most in-demand game on StubHub but tops the list with a $414 average ticket price.

Overall, the Capitals are No. 6 among StubHub’s hottest ticket sellers, which is up from No. 8 last season, No. 15 in 2016 and No. 17 in 2014.

The NHL 2019 Bridgestone Winter Classic is No. 3 on StubHub’s in-demand list, featuring the Chicago Blackhawks vs. Boston Bruins, Jan. 1 in Notre Dame Stadium, with a $192 average ticket price’

The Toronto Maple Leafs at Chicago Blackhawks (Oct. 7, $208) and the Pittsburgh Penguins at Vegas (Jan. 19, $247) are also among StubHub’s Top Five.

The Knights are not taking their foot off the gas when it comes to interaction with fans and selling tickets.

Today, the team unveiled a multi-year alliance with William Hill US, a leading global sports book operator, calling it the first between a NHL team in North America and a sports book.

During the pre-season, the Knights got permission to put real gold dust in their center ice logo.

And the team will expand on its "Vegas Born" multi-media campaign support the team’s sophomore season.

”It's a real fan-centric campaign," team CMO Brian Killingsworth said in a statement.

"It really symbolizes part of our DNA, being part of the community and celebrating our fans. We're putting fans at the front and center of this campaign to show our respect and pay homage to our incredible fan base."

Demand for players merchandise is on the rise, according to stats from StubHub and parent company  eBay.

According to eBay data, since John Tavares' off-season move as a free agent from the New York Islanders to his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs, there has been a 366% increase in his merchandise sold.

Nearly six times as many Maple Leaf Tavares jerseys sold in July versus the month prior to his arrival, according to eBay.

“We’ve seen a 49% surge in demand for Maple Leafs tickets as Toronto fans are clearly excited about the potential of a Stanley Cup Finals run with their hometown hero, John Tavares, at the helm,” said Jablonski.

NHL home openers are among the most in-demand among StubHub customers.

In addition to the Golden Knights and Capitals, home opening tickets are most in-demand for the Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers. (Full list below.)
