Visa Renews With IOC Through 2032, To Include Paris, Los Angeles And Beyond

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

July 31, 2018: With the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo just two years off, International Olympic Committee top-tier partner Visa has taken steps to ensure that its alliance with the IOC continues well beyond those Games.

Visa, an official IOC partner since 1986, has extended its alliance through 2032.

Visa last renewed its IOC partnership in 2009, then set to expire in 2012, for eight years though 2020.

That pact now encompasses the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, 2024 Paris Summer Games, 2026 Winter Games (site not yet named), the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games and the to-be-determined 2030 Winter Games and 2032 Summer Olympics.

Financial terms of the extension were not disclosed.

The cost of a four-year deal,, which includes a Summer and Winter Game platform, was estimated at $100 million by industry analysts.

In 2017, Intel signed with the IOC through 2024 in a deal valued at $400 million by analysts.

According to the IOC, Visa, a founding member of The Olympic Partner (TOP) Program, has “continuously delivered innovative payment solutions to each Games.”

Omega, which has worked with the IOC since 1932, also has a deal that runs through 2032.

“Visa provides a secure and fast way to pay across merchants, borders and currencies, and the Olympic Games provides an unparalleled opportunity to promote the Visa brand at both a local market level and globally,” Lynne Biggar, chief marketing and communications officer, for Visa Inc., said a statement.

“With the renewed sponsorship, Visa will continue to leverage the global stage of the Games to achieve important strategic objectives such as expanding acceptance and increasing top of wallet preference for Visa products among consumers.”

The IOC has experienced a fluctuation in top-tier deals over the past few years.

In 2017, McDonald’s ended its IOC alliance (but continues to work with U.S. Olympic Committee programs as an unofficial partner).

Late last year, China-based e-commerce giant Alibaba Group signed a deal with the IOC through 2028.

According to IOC President Thomas Bach, “We are particularly happy with this extension of our partnership because Visa is one of the founding members of our TOP Programme.

“Our partnership with Visa demonstrates a shared commitment to the legacy of the Olympic Games and the global Olympic Movement. Visa has always been a driving force for innovation on the world stage.

Visa is also an official partner with FIFA and activated marketing to support its contactless payment technology at the recently concluded World Cup.

“Since 1986, Visa has brought the latest payment innovations and digital experiences to the Olympic Games, all while helping athletes in their quest to achieve greatness,” Al Kelly, CEO for Visa Inc., said in a statement.

“By continuing our support of the Olympic Movement and the Olympic Games through 2032, we will ensure the next generation of athletes, fans, cardholders and clients are able to get more out of their Olympic experience, and be part of a movement that inspires and unites us all to do great things.”

Said Biggar, “Visa will continue to deliver exceptional benefits to its clients, partners and Olympic Games visitors, from payment exclusivity at the Olympic Games, to unique experiences across digital and other platforms.

IOC top-tier partners include Alibaba Group, Atos, Bridgestone, Coca-Cola, Dow, GE, Intel, Omega, Panasonic, Procter & Gamble, Samsung, Toyota and Visa.
